KTXF/Twin Falls, Idaho - This Is So Sad

Similar situation in Macon, Georgia a while ago. ABC was demanding too much compensation, so the local affiliate went indie.

That is indeed sad! I lived in Twin Falls for a year '96/'97 when I was doing consulting work for KMVT. Way back then the station had just transitioned from KKVI to KXTF and was pumping in news from Pocatello but did local updates for the Magic Valley specifically. Twin Falls stations KSAW and KTFT bring in KIVI and KTVB from Boise respectively. I suspect the local cable nets might bring in KNIN. The former historic Fox station in Boise, KTRV has major problems itself(They just shuttered their news department after 13 years of having one ending both their morning and 10pm newscasts back in December).

Except that KTRV isn't Fox anymore, either...Fox is now on KNIN.

Corrected :) Last year was such a blur, but it obviously highlights the problems Fox had with its Idaho affiliates.

The Fox affiliate in Market No. 191 is splitting from the network, citing high retransmission rates. And they are now mulling making This TV - usually shown on digital subchannels of television stations - as their primary affiliation.

I would love to have THIS TV back in my region. It was replaced in the Cincinnati area with Bounce TV.......has crap for programming all the time.

FOX figures it can do better with subchannels and cable only coverage.

This seems to be going back to the days when you had ABC preferring to have two VHF stations cherry pick its programs rather than give full time ABC affiliation to the UHF channel that wants it.

And the viewers lose. If FOX ends up on a subchannel of a CBS or NBC affiliate, say goodbye to 1080i HD for the main network, or even worse, FOX comes back with no HD.

Fox broadcasts in 720P on WDAF, ABC broadcasts in 720P on its O&Os

Add to it with ABC O&O, that they run dual 720p HD on their stations (local ABC station & Livewell Network, both in 720p HD & looks like crap).

When WFXW (now WAWV) in Terre Haute, IN dropped Fox to re-affiliate with ABC, WTHI (CBS affiliate) added Fox on a subchannel, but only broadcasts it in SD, but CBS remains in 1080i HD. I hear the HD version of Fox is available on cable only.

WISE-TV in Fort Wayne, IN runs dual HD on their station by running NBC in 1080i, & Fox in 720p. Not sure that's working out for them. I know it can't look good when specific programming needs a lot of bandwidth (worse if running 2 programs at the same time needing a lot of bandwidth).

Perhaps this is a sign of things to come with other network affiliates, especially in smaller markets. How many FOX affiliates will there be in 2025?

The remaining tie-up has been solved. KXPI-LD Idaho Falls (Fisher along with KIDK) will pick up Fox. The station already has a local newscast, produced by KIDK. (Which also means produced by KIFI. Don't you just love SSAs?)
