KTXT-FM Lubbock is no more...

Umm, wrong. Very wrong. KOHM >NEVER< "drooled" over the 88.1 frequency. EVER.

I bet they did when KOHM was a 5 Watt - yes WATT - not kW, licensed to Coronado high school on 91.1. KTXT was 10 WATTS on 91.9 - but still managed to cover all of Lubbock from their tall (by Lubbock standards) tower. I heard them as much as 110 miles away on skip at that power.

Yep. And while Derrick mentioned the points about having HD radio or webstreaming as outlets for KOHM's additional programming, before HD was approved by the FCC in 2002 and before webstreaming was practical, KOHM would have loved to have KTXT's frequency.

While KOHM may not have "drooled" over KTXT since you've been there in 1996 Derrick doesn't mean that KOHM "never" drooled over it. Never say never.

I do agree with Derrick on all the other points he made though, except for the fact that he assumes he is the only one on this board that understands radio based on this statement:

"The comments made here and elsewhere show a very simple lack of understanding about the radio medium, non-comm operation and Student Media's failure to properly train and oversee operations at KTXT."

I did work for both KTXT and KOHM.

No, I'm sure there are many here that know all about radio.

My statement you refer to was directed at the many various notes, emails, messages, posts, and other "fare" I've seen here and elsewhere across the Web devoted to the subject of saving KTXT. There's much misinformation being propagated, my goal is to decrease the S/N ratio.

I certainly didn't mean to deride or imply stupidity on anyone's part. (Except for Student Media perhaps!)

My purpose in signing up and joining in the conversation is to set a few things straight, since Student Media apparently didn't have the knowledge or expertise to teach/train the students in what they needed. Of particular note:

-Could KTXT underwrite? Yes they could. And they did prior to 2001. Why did that stop? The comments made in the AJ article earlier this week pretty much demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding by SM staff about advertising vs underwriting.

-Could KTXT fundraise? Yes they could. And they did prior to 2001 and maybe a time or two since. We have 2 fundraisers a year at KOHM and I dare say have had some success in that regard. When you rely on Student Services monies for funding, you are beholden to them for everything.

I'm hearing stories that this was actually NOT a financial decision, but one motivated by politics, in particular some at the top who were tired of the "liberal" element that KTXT represented. I don't think this story is quite over, there appears to be a lot of outrage.

True that 88.1 has been a slacker haven to varying degrees over the years, but that's what college radio is, and what makes it such an integral part of the college experience. KTXT was really awesome in the days of "College Rock", before Alternative became a commercial format. I got my first dose of Soundgarden, the Cure, the Pixies, the Smiths, and gosh knows what else from that station. I really loved listening to (and frequently laughing at) what they would be playing when I drove into town, most recently just this last Thanksgiving. Lubbock has never been a town with much kindness for young folks or "weirdoes", which is even more true now that KTXT is off the air. Lubbock didn't need to become even more bleak than it already is.

Really sad, but again I don't think this is over yet. The "Save KTXT" group on Facebook is already pushing 3,000.

Wow, it did not take very much pressure to smoke out the true agenda of Student Media getting rid of KTXT, as it sort of looks like they are using it now to try to make nice with the KTXT kids and cover their butt too, by saying that they are open to online broadcasting and are planning to do it!

Don't get too excited yet, as you do need to read the fine print:

"The Student Media Department does plan to create a broadcasting presence online with news, sports, talk shows, and possibly music, but they say it will not be KTXT."

So, goodbye KTXT and hello 100% Susan Peterson approved DailyToreadorRadio.com 24/7!

Which knowing them, this will just turn out to be paid for canned propaganda, from the highest bidder that Dawn goes out and finds from some colleges r us syndication company. (That is after they realize how it is even harder to motivate and manage students doing consistent and original quality talk programming ... or how much trouble kids can get into running their mouths non-stop without any real broadcasting protocol or guidelines.)

But I am sure you will still be able to buy your La Ventana while you're streaming this new format.

It's just a click to the left.

So it's all good.

They aren't really helping with that either, it's an alumni that stepped up, and I'm not even sure Texas Tech needs to sanction an online broadcast for it to happen.

If the fans had supported the station financially it would still be here.
The only stations that survive with financial backing are the WKRP types run by someone who doesn't care how much money they lose.

I had the errr.. pleasure of spending 2 yrs in Lubbock and the ONLY thing that saved this poor old cotton field of a town was KTXT! It gave me reassurance that I was not alone and there actually were other people like me out there somewhere in lubbock playing great music everyday. This is really really sad...there is nothing more I can say except I am even happier to be far away from Peggy Sue.

To Nicod:

We are grateful that you were able to spend your time and money in our city...however, we are even happier that you chose to leave. Our biggest regret is that you never called to get us to help you pack and get out of here.

Any news on this front? I heard something about a rally this week?
School started back up today at Tech & 88.1 is still off the air.

If Tech isn't going to use the license they need to turn it back in to the FCC.
