Kudlow Adds Chicago

CNBC personality Larry Kudlow, who currently hosts a Saturday midday (10 AM-1 PM) show on WABC, will also be doing a show for sister station WLS-AM in Chicago, Saturdays from 3-6 PM local time, according to Chicago media columnist Robert Feder:

I presume Larry Kudlow will do his WLS show from New York. Will the WLS show be live, or a tape-delay from WABC?

Might Citadel be getting Kudlow ready as a possible replacement for Rush and/or Sean? :)

I was hoping they would syndy Kudlow's show. Every Saturday I am in the earea, I listen to his show. Although, it is heavily localized in the presentation.

I like Kudlow, but I put him in the category of people who is actually better on TV than he is on radio. Like Jim Cramer, he's much more presentational in a visual medium. Left to focus solely on his voice.......I dunno. There's no doubting the man's intelligence, but I worry that he runs the risk (on radio) of being just another Opinionated Guy Lecturing About The Economy.

It'll be interesting to see if Kudlow's show gets traction beyond just the Citadel stations that Citadel Media left hanging when they pushed Brinker off of Saturdays announced Bob Brinker was cutting back his schedule to just Sundays.

Cramer's program works on TV because of the visuals. He is highly animated, something you won't catch on the audio feeds of his program.
It is entertainment.

I guess part of my point was that Cramer and Kudlow have voices that "wear" better on TV because there are other things for an audience member's senses to focus on. On radio, it's just the voice.

I just know I find Cramer easier to watch than to listen to, back when he was doing a daily radio show. I just couldn't take his voice, and only his voice, for more than a few minutes.

Will Kudlow's voice be more palatable? Time will tell.

I sampled some of his show today. He started giving the telephone number out as "9222" in lieu of the "WABC" that he has been accustomed to. I guess this is the number that will be used for his new syndicated show.

Granted, it's not necessarily a New York-centric show, by any means, outside of Wall Street. But it's just the latest in a long line of shows on WABC that are no longer "local."

And for some reason, back in the day when he had a syndicated radio show, Jim didn't use that uptempo presentation at all...which is probably why the radio show was such a flop. It really was a disappointment, given the tempo of the TV show. The radio show had all the boring depth, with none of the entertainment.

Which one? I believe he had three different syndicated radio programs, and all of them failed. One of them airing on the defunct "Free-FM" (CBS) stations, another syndicated by WOR, and the third whose origin escapes me.

I was referring to "Jim Cramer's Real Money". It was a daily 1-hour show that went off the air in December 2006. At the time it was on in more than 70 markets including NYC, LA, Chicago, SF, Houston, Philly, Atlanta and DC. That show didn't fail, Cramer walked away from it because he wanted to focus more time and energy on TV.

Does anyone know how Kudlow's show is doing so far? I realize it's just started nationally, but for some reason there's no information on the Citadel Media website (other than the introductory press release) and no indication that Citadel is even involved with Kudlow's show. Maybe they're doing a soft roll-out?

That's what HE said. The truth is he didn't want to devote ANY energy to radio, and it's why it failed.

Not long afterwards, he lashed out about radio.

Perhaps we have different definitions of what constitutes "failing".

If stations were cutting his show left and right, or he got dumped by his syndicator, or something like that, that's one thing.

The fact is that Cramer was on 70+ stations when his show went off the air in December 2006 and he was on the top-10 markets I mentioned in my previous post.

You say Cramer's show failed. You're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to your own set of facts.

I say he made a choice.

He had a show that was, in terms of station pick-up and audience reach, more successful than 99% of the shows on talk radio, and he chose to walk away from it.

But hey.....this is a discussion thread that is (at least nominally) about Larry Kudlow's show. Does anyone have any intel/insight into the questions I asked about his show in my previous post? If so, please weigh in.

Was it profitable? That's how Cramer judges stocks, and that's how the success of his show should be evauated. Not the number of stations that carried it. I'd also want to know how those stations felt about the show. Were they satisfied with his performance, were they planning to re-up, or were they complaining. Find the answers to those questions and you may come around to my opinion. Or maybe not.

I don't know if it was profitable. Moreover, I don't know how the stations felt about the show, etc. I can only assume, however, that you do know the answers to the questions you laid out.

Wait, so you don't know??? ;)

If you know, please post what you know here. If you don't know, and you're just basing your opinion on a gut feeling instead of actual facts (which you're more than entitled to do) then please admit it. Thanks.

I remember that. "Radio as we know it is dead," he said. Sour grapes, James?

By the way, I did sample the new syndicated show. A little quieter than his old local WABC show, except he now has a new toll-free number with his name (KUDLOW) in it.

Oh, and he was broadcasting from West Palm Beach because he was invited to Rush Limbaugh's most recent wedding.
