Kudos and Thanks to KACC

I know, in the past, there have been a few discussions about KACC on this board. I had never seriously taken the time to listen with any great amount of cause. Yesterday afternoon, while enjoying the weekend weather outside and becoming typically frustrated with the rock quality elsewhere on the dial, I happened to tune into KACC and all I can say is, Kudos!

For the hours I listened, I heard a pleasant variety of classic 60s and 70s album rock and a nice blend of 80s music, too. I really enjoyed listening and just in case any KACC folks are around the board, this weekend, I just wanted to say, thanks!

For the past several months, I've been near the point of burnout when it comes to radio in Houston. Regardless of the format and without any ill-regard toward any specific realm of corporate ownership, I've found the dial, as a whole, to be rather depressing, of late. (I'll spare the specifics, since I know we all have our own opinions of what is and is not flat; I'm not one to purposefully step on anyone's toes.)

That said, I found KACC to be a breath of fresh air. I felt so strongly about my enjoyment that I tweaked my radio presets to include the station into my favorites.

In my opinion, I find it rather sad, in a way, that Alvin Community College's station can seemingly get it right, while the corporate conglomerates in Houston seemingly seldom do. :'(

Keep up the great work, KACC, thanks for playing a wonderful variety, and, most importantly, keep on rockin'!

Too bad "God" radio out of Beaumont (actually Orangefield) blocks KACC to the east........I hated it when the station came on and wiped out KACC on the east and NE side.

Please allow me to add to those kudos by saying that the quality behind the scenes is also palpable. Alvin has turned out some very fine Radio people over the years, thanks in part to the devotion and unwavering demand for excellence by Cathy Forsythe; that tradition is being carried forward by the current custodians of the station. I've hired some greatpeople from the Alvin program over the years. It's no accident that what you're hearing coming out of the speakers is good stuff, Maynard!

I'm just glad I live in an area where I can get KACC real clear, including my home stereo. This is what a rock station should sound like. If I could get a KACC sticker, I'd sport it on my car!

I'll Amen that! I'd proudly display them on my car, any day.

Wow...It's like Christmas in April. I am absolutely touched that you guys like the station. We have a lot of fun here. I think the students really get a kick out of building a fan base and working on making their shows more entertaining than just liners and more music. I'm glad you like the music. We don't really follow conventional programming guidelines. I prefer to think of our programming as a Rock Mp3 player....mixed and at times unpredicatble. Kind of like some of the early FM rock stations, but not quite as deep. My favorite aspect of what we do is our local music. There aren't enough stations in the country promoting their local talent. To me, there are some hidden jems within that area. One of our most requested bands are JJ and the Rogues from Dallas. The talent from these 21 year olds is amazing. Think early Beatles with a little Steely Dan influence. Very good stuff. I would've never heard them if we didn't promote local music. We have a lot of local artists that are in that same talent category. Plus, hardly anyone is playing any of the local bands, so it's almost like we have an exclusive.

Once again, thank you for all of the nice compliments.

You guys really want stickers? No problem. I'd be honored for you to get some. Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] and give me your address and we'll send them out ASAP.

This station lives and will continue to live in the spirit of one of the greatest people I have ever known, Cathy Forsythe. I owe my career, my degree, and my passion for communications to her. I would be stocking the endcaps at Wal Mart if she hadn't been such a great influence in my life. The fact that you like the station is a testimonial to her.

A sincere heartfelt thank you from The Gulf Coast Rocker.

I live on the League City-Friendswood border and I love having a local-focused station with music I like! I can pick it up well all the way out here on Gessner Rd. where I work, too. Keep up the good work!

Mark,

Seriously, keep up the great work! I'm sure Cathy's angelic wings are holding all of you and still guiding you from above! I never had the pleasure of meeting her, but from everything I've heard about her from friends who did know her, I've no doubt she had a great influence on radio, in this area, as a whole.

And, oh yeah, you're welcome! ;)

I hear KACC fairly well on the Wilcrest-Alief Clodine area. I have it on my presets, so I can hunker down on some good rock when I'm having to do a little traveling in my neck of the woods on the weekend.

Mark, what would be pretty cool is to have a "Houston Rock Jock" weekend, where you have a bunch of Houston DJs come down there and have a two to three hour shift and do their thing. It could be a fun event.

Has anyone noticed that since about the time this thread blew up, KACC has from time to time billed itself as "Houston's Favorite Rock Station"? I love it! :D

At the rate things are going, it may go from "Favorite" to "Only" before we know it.

That's a sad truth, indeed, but a highly possible one. Listening to Houston radio through the 90s and listening to it now is like listening to night and day and for the most part, not for the better. At least, if it happens and KACC is the only rock station, they do seem to still care about the music and what the listeners enjoy.

We really do care about our listeners. I have told the students to make sure when someone calls to thank them for listening. When someone takes time out of their day to call the station and give us a compliment, we should treasure that. When I see a KACC sticker on a car, I just want to jump out and hug that person. What a tremendous compliment it is for someone to put our station sticker on one of the most expensive purchases they can make. If I get shot from approaching a car, you'll know why. It's still worth it ;D

We're doing what we can to keep folks from stacking their ipods with music and shutting off the radio. I'm always open to new ideas from everyone except consultants for keeping REAL radio alive.

By the way, we are working on Chuck's idea about having celebrity guest jocks in during the summer. I'll keep you posted.

I certainly wish there was a way to obtain a translator or acquire another station to simulcast KACC for those of us in the northern areas of Houston. Once you're past DT, it's all over for 89.7's signal. I certainly enjoy tuning in during a trip down to the island. Sure wish I had 8 mil. to buy KTEK from Biz Radio if they DO go belly up. I think most of us are to the point where it doesn't matter whether it's on AM or FM, as long as it's good rock music like ACC plays, and listenable in all areas of Houston. You know, as I remember KACC was a better catch in the old days when it was at 91.3. Boy, am I starting to show my age. Oh well, it's all just wishful thinking on my part.

Yeah, I guess, but that's not going to serve everybody. The number of Houstonians without HD radio still surpass those that do have it by quite a bit. Thinking about it more and more, if a deal could be pulled off with the KJIC folks that would be a hell of a place for KACC to land. Since KJIC upgraded power to 36kw, it covers quite a bit of real estate.

Mark, if you'd be willing to take requests for those celebrity guest jocks, I'd like to nominate Jenna Foxx of KLOL fame as well as our own "aunti-terrestrial" here on the boards, formerly of KKRW.

Yes, if there is one man who deserves Kudos is my guy Mark Moss! I remember when we were in that trailer during the 91.3 days and to see what he has done to make that station stand out (with the students and the programing) and be a true favorite station, is incredible. Proud to say I went to KACC...Rock weekend huh? If Moss throws in a Crawfish Boil...I am down!

Awshucks, purpledevil, you're a peach. I do love KACC---best terrestrial rock radio I've heard in years.

I call it as I see it, aunti. Sure would be good to hear your voice on the airwaves again, even if only for a guest appearance. :)
