Given the transition in morning drive at WINZ, I thought a new thread might be in order.
And I begin with an acknowledgement that I am not an unbiased party--I twice filled in for Nicole at WINZ and I was an on-air contributor to the show in the first hour, after doing my day job for a company other than CC, (which is actually my night job).
But that out of the way, I would think that any one taking a half-way objective view of this situation would want to send a few "atta-girls" in the direction of Nicole Sandler, even if you might disagree with her politics.
The poster Smedge delivered some wisdom in a previous thread:
"Most talk radio consultants (Cooke, Sabo, et. al.) will say it takes 18 months for a talk format/host change to show results. Even considering that, for the obvious cost of "one" person, WINZ was getting the same results in morning drive as WIOD and its (decimated but still considerable) army of anchors and reporters."
Smedge--this is all true, and by the way from my observation of the two stations, which are physically located adjacement to one another at CC, I would also praise the high quality of the morning news product at WIOD, which is shared to some extent with WINZ. I again note, because some don't seem to have absorbed it yet, that Nicole topped WIOD in morning drive among men, 25-54 (yes, I know it was close David Eduardo, but it was not a "statistical tie"--I learned in an elementary school math class that even a tenth of a point is more than zero). And frankly David, I find it rather sad that you want to go out of your way to minimize Nicole's performance.
As Smedge pointed out, talkradio is a very slow-building format. This is especially true in the Sunbelt in general, and particularly in a market like Miami-Ft. Lauterdale--there is less stability in the makeup of the population and thus less of a sense of community, and there is less demand for certain basic informational services (a prime example is weather, which much research indicates is the number one reason given by many for tuning into AM radio). With the obvious exception of hurricanes, there is far less fluctuation in the weather in Miami than elsewhere.
A lot of people--even some smart ones--come to Miami to get away--even mentally--from the kinds of topics talked about on WINZ and WIOD. In addition, the market is way over-radioed, and as we all know, the percentage of English speakers in the market is far less than it once was. And for whatever reason, there was little if anything in the way of outside promotion for Nicole's show, on which she worked day and night--almost always by herself.
In spite of all these obstacles, she began a growth trend, and brought morning drive at WINZ to parity and a little more in comparison to WIOD. I rest my case.
Oh and one other thing-Nicole will be back, because she always comes back--usually in a high-profile position. Tha's because a) she's talented and b) she's a trooper, like you wouldn't believe.
