Kudos to the Radio-Info webmaster

I e-mailed them about continuing (incorrectly) to list KSWD-FM as "Adult Alternative" on the PPM ratings page and soon after, they changed the format listing correctly to "Classic Rock" on the page. Thanks to those in charge -- Many props! 8)

OMG! Finally!! lol

Another LOL :D as I may have to retract my kudos as the currently new April PPM ratings [on Radio-Info] once again show KSWD as "Adult Alternative" .... Riiiiight, Thursdays they play sets of three from one artist/band (like Two for Tuesdays on KLOS)... AAA artists like Steve Miller, ELO, Neil Young, CSN, Pink Floyd, Bad Company (yikes!) etc.........

I happend to tune in for a bit today (a now very infrequent occurance). They are playing the first of three songs by Yes - "Roundabout". I think to myself, "I wonder if I can predict the next two songs to complete this set of three songs on this "Triple Play Thursday"?. Ok, here goes: I predict they will play "I've Seen All Good People" and "Long Distance Runaround". Was I right? Of course. But this isn't about any Extra-Sensory Predictive Perception on my part since I of course I have none; it is all about the microscopic playlist and utter lack of programming imagination they have over there. I guess it has been about two years now since they first went on the air as a full blown AAA? Well in that time the reverse transformation is now complete. The Sound has morphed back into... ARROW!!! Playing the same 500 songs by the same 100 artists into the ground. Well done guys.

Except at least the original ARROW had an entertaining sports guy in the morning.

Apparently its not Extra-Sensory......or even common sense on your part.

The station has doubled in the key demographic Persons 25-54 since November.

In fact, they have increased 350% from 2 years ago when they signed on.

Though you were trying to be sarcastic in your "well done guys", they actually have done VERY WELL - getting rid of that POS format that anyone with any brains knew was a ratings septic tank.

Maybe you don't get around much on this board so I'll help you out. KSWD defied everyone's expectations in March when they jumped from a 1.9 to a 2.8 using essentially the same format as I described above. I provided a non-sarcastic "job well done" for them at the time on a commercial, if not artistic basis. You can read the full post here:

http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=164973.10

Since that time they have trended straight-down. Last three periods: 2.8-2.4-2.3 in 6+. I realize 6+ is no way to make conclusions, but it would be inconceivable that in-demo ratings are not similarly going down.

Also, as mentioned many times before, NOBODY on this board including me believed that the format they had to start with would be successful. The main topic regarding the station at the time of its launch was not if, but when they would change format, with most predictions between 6 and 18 months.

Their complete transformation to classic rock took place last July. However, even then they had a much larger playlist than they do now. Since then they have shrunk the playlist to a bare minimum on-air library and have had the ratings success to prove that bad radio pays best. But even bad radio can't last forever if you are playing the same stale 40 year old songs in high rotation. Even KRTH refreshes the playlist somewhat every now and then. MY guess is they got a great short-term shot in the arm by playing only the most recognizable (tired) hits, but when they do not rotate songs, even old AOR die-hards can only stand to hear Boston's first album played to death so many times. The subsequent dive reflects that.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that the Sound is approaching it's make or break point with Bonneville Corporate.
They have had some success, but now seem to be trending in the wrong direction. The problem isn't "just" the music. The station is not very exciting, not that it has to be, but for starters there is little interaction with their audience. I mean, I can't find a listing for a request line, which means, no call-in contests and no listener feedback unless you do it on-line. The staff is pretty low key as well. Some of these people would be lucky to make the weekend staff at rock stations of the past. Their imaging is well written and produced, but while Nick Michaels has a great voice, his delivery and energy is somewhat dull. Don't get me wrong, he's good, but the station needs a better personality on the whole. I've seen no TV spots for the Sound and outside of a few billboards there isn't much in the way of letting people even know that they are there. I could go on...

Gosh, I do not spend my life on these boards - what a shame ;)

Your ratings *assumptions* are incorrect - and in Persons 25-54, KSWD has been stable - certainly within the statisical margin of error the research - essential a 3.0 share for the last 3 months. Your *assumptions* also do not take into account what happened to shares of ALL LA stations when SBS pulled their encoding and ended up with goose eggs on those days back in Feb. But it's not my job (nor do I have the time) to educate you on how to read ratings or teach 3rd grade math on how to split up a 100% pie when several people leave the table.

Bottom line, in Persons 25-54 rating, which IS an Apples to Apples comparison, unlike share, KSWD is pretty stable over the past 4 months with a 0.3 rating 3 out of the last 4 months - 300% higher than the 0.1 rating they had a year ago with the Triple AAA format.

In fact the 6+ rating also show the same overall stability over the past 4 months.

Are you really that ignorant laughing at a 0.3 rating? The #1 station, KIIS-FM, only has a 0.6
