Kudos To WJGH & The B'Day Bash

Last Friday Magic 107.3 celebrated its’ first birthday by throwing a birthday bash at Jax Beach for the listeners. Opportunities for radio junkies like me to schmooze with radio folks don’t happen often so I was pumped to attend the bash. Honestly, most radio promotions today are forgettable. This one was done right to include all the on-air excitement it generated.

PD Neal Sharpe is as enthusiastic, upbeat and positive in person just as he comes off on the air. Yeah, I couldn’t resist talking about my favorite subject – programming! Tony Mann just seems at home spinning the hits and taking requests in party mode. What a blast to finally meet J.T. I always love the reaction I get when the “JohnJax” character is revealed. He knows how to work the crowd but even more important - he knows how to pull off a 1 man morning show.

Seriously, the biggest rush I got was meeting and chatting with other listeners. Those of you who know me and who have understood what I have been saying for years about radio in Jax will know full well why that would bring me the most satisfaction.

They say every picture is worth 1000 words. Maybe it’s time you guys get to see the guy behind the words too. I’m in the striped shirt next to a buddy who was a Tee Shirt winner. I guess you can tell I felt like I was a kid in a candy store.

How are there ratings and will they be around for their 2nd birthday party?
 
Vadar, you raise an excellent question. Back to reality, radio is a tough and challenging business and really no one can predict with certainty what the landscape will look like sometimes even months down the road.

PPM brings a number of challenges. If a station goes off the air or has signal loss resulting in those meter folks changing stations, that result is felt immediately unlike diary. Not to use this as an excuse, but since that lightning strike months ago, my understanding is Magic 107.3 is not expected to be at full power until the end of August.

You guys don’t need me to remind all of you in just how challenging and tough the business of radio is. But let’s look at where we are. Magic has been positioning itself to be in the center with WEJZ on one end and WJGL on the other. I have long considered that "zone" a hole in the market. My understanding too is Magic is mainly attracting upper-end females. I always knew Eagle had a different audience so I've been proven right there too. From a billing/revenue perspective, it probably makes the most sense plus I believe females are underserved in Jax.

Will that be enough? To me, it’s a good start. I often say radio is full of surprises. Magic replaced Planet and who the hell would ever thought one of the most popular and if I might say “beloved’ stations in Jax would have ever gone away practically overnight?

Personally, I love the Greatest Hits format and I still believe Magic has the potential to be a giant in this town. But things can change including flipping via edicts from upper mgt. But I will say this, if Magic did go away for one reason or another, it would not be because the station was in the wrong hands. I like the sound of the station. If their P1s are attracted to the station and they make lots of $$$, they will probably be around. If not, unlike the past I would be disappointed but not angry. Unlike the past, Magic has been given many opportunities to succeed. CC gets a lot of bad press. I regret what happened to Planet but I am very appreciative of CC’s efforts to try and make this work.
