KUFO Sighting On AM 970

I understand Alpha is holding onto the KUFO call letters and parking them on sister AM station "Freedom 970", ditching the KXFD calls, which make much more sense for that format.

Now watch Alpha bring the rock format back on AM 970, and launch an FM translator for it.

If they move calls to 970, what stops another FM from having KUFO-FM? Not unlike KCBS-AM in SF and KCBS-FM in LA.

§ 73.3550 Requests for new or modified call sign assignments.

(m) Where a requested call sign, without the “-FM,' “-TV,” “-CA” or “LP” suffix, would conform to the call sign of any other non-commonly owned station(s) operating in a different service, an applicant utilizing the on-line reservation and authorization system will be required to certify that consent to use the secondary call sign has been obtained from the holder of the primary call sign.

In other words, they would have to get permission from Alpha to use the call KUFO-FM.
Alpha could even make them pay big $$ for it.

If KUFO goes on AM, they better get a translator or nobody will listen. AM sucks.

It would make lots more sense for them to go after 95.5 FM and for Alpha to move the sports to 970 AM.

At least they made the smart move in parking the calls so no competitor could start a new KUFO ;)

Wonder why Clear Channel didn't park the WHRL calls somewhere when their rock format on 103.1 flipped to a simulcast of WGY-FM... they also made a mistake in not moving the WHEN calls to the former WSYR-FM in Florida (which is now WPHR-FM, calls formerly on 106.9) when they moved Power 106.9 to AM 620 (which should've been changed to WPHR, if you ask me) and launched WSYR-FM on 106.9. CBS gets it right pretty much every time though (picking up WBZZ for 100.7 Pittsburgh after 105.7 Albany dropped it, parking WBCN on a small station in NC, parking WNEW on a station in Florida, etc.)

As BoiseEngineer points out above, the "primary callsign holder" would have to grant permission to a broadcaster to share it on a different band. Such a deal exists with the WBEN calls in Buffalo (AM) and Philadelphia (FM).

KLCK is little local one horse AM station licensed to Goldendale, WA. KLCK-FM is a Sandusky owned Modern AC in Seattle. KLCK (AM) probably gets nice $$$ from Sandusky every month......
