KUHF Adds AAA Format

HD-3 and the third internet stream has flipped from a Spanish talk format to XPoNential Radio from WXPN Philadelphia.

The top of hour ID makes no mention of HD Radio, branding it as an internet radio station. Not sure when they did this - if they've done anything to promote it, I'm not aware of it. But it's cool to hear Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters and Men on the radio again.

Cool! I'll have to check that out. Yet another HD sub channel that is light years better than the over the air / HD-1 format. So many cities get bad HD-2 formats, Houston has such bad radio that the ONLY formats worth listening to are HD subchannels!

I wish all of Houston radio will upgrade to full HD power. I can get the HD signal on KUHF out in Lavaca county better than the analog signal.

I've seen posters rave about this service even on non-radio related internet forums, so it appears to have a following.

Now if only HD radios were easy to find. Done an internet search for them lately? You really gotta dig to come up with anything.

Sounds great. Maybe they can find a main signal to put it on here, perhaps on 91.7 and move classical back to 88.7.

I think you're right; Classical should go back to 88-7. KUH-FM because it's hard for any radio to pick up 91.7, and it should become a Triple-A station. That'll make a good recovery for listeners who missed 103.7 ever since that station became CCM-Like KSBJ.

I don't have a problem with 91.7. Given the unreliability of HD radio, I'd hate to have classical only on HD-2. That would be a step in the wrong direction.

I didn't hear the final results of the 103.7 pledge drive - I hate to admit it but Air One has really wimped out over the years and probably has 90% of the same playlist as K-Love or KSBJ. I keep hoping maybe the Air 1 people will be enticed to sell out to KSBJ for NGEN, which is really good (and what Air 1 ought to be doing).

What is the point in keeping the HD-3 signal?  It only makes the analog signal more susceptible to multipath along with the reduced bandwidth making it a less-optimal option for music (can it even fit stereo?).  I can hear flutter in the background on some radios and is susceptible to multipath on my car radio.

I believe KPFT scrapped its HD-3 (alternate program stream) signal not too long ago.  At full power it exhibits almost full quieting and less susceptible to multipath on the car radio.

Both have a necessity to have HD-2s, KUHF using its coverage to rebroadcast KUHA and KPFT providing a broadcast home for Rice Radio, while the 3s were used for experimental programming. I predict that HPR will scrap the HD-3 soon.

Whether there is a HD-2 or a HD-3, IBOC is IBOC. Dropping the third stream would only change the bitrates allocated to the other channels. But I should know better to let how it works get in the way of an anti-IBOC rant.

My guess is KPFT scrapping HD-3 has more to do with saving money on purchasing programming to fill it - which they need to repair their transmitter.

But if XPoNential Radio either as a web stream or a side channel helps bring younger people into public radio, then it's worthwhile. Plus the music kicks @$$.

It is certainly interesting - I don't like every song they play, but it is new and refreshing. I just wish the quality was better. That bitrate really muffles it and the classical.
