KUOW makes staff/program cuts

The Way Radio Is Nowadays, of course.

(a) No discussion of any on-air program cuts. No staffers laid off were on-air talent, but open newsroom positions will not be filled.

(b) The CEO honestly admitting they have relied on baby boomers for years because they were cheap and easy to serve: "They just wanted to turn on the firehose of content and have it wash over them." As compared to those kids who want podcasts and on-demand digital content....

Their revenues increased, but the costs increased even more, according to an article in the Seattle Times last week.

And that's a great point. Not all cuts are needed for the same situation/reason. Some sidecar divisions like news websites never did, or no longer pay their way, so it doesn't make sense to keep them running. Post-pandemic labor costs have shot up. That includes minimum wage employees and many union-represented operations. Income from donations may be up, but still doesn't offset the increase in expenses. In the case of public and commercial stations, the advertising/underwriting downturn hasn't helped either.
