KUOW - Weekday w Stever Scher question

A serious question -

I'm a late night/early morning guy so sometimes I'm a little foggy in the 10-11 am daypart but KUOW is my wake-up station. I might have totally dreamed this up but yesterday (Thurs) I swear I heard the home improvement guy (Roger Faris) say something about the Olympic Mountains being cardboard. Scher sounded very uncomfortable but Roger went on, saying that he knew it for a fact, they were phoney, etc. I think it was some kind of climate change discussion before calls came in about paint, etc.

I guess I can email Scher directly but did anyone hear this? Was I having audio hallucinations? I know, I know - I can hear the tapping of keyboards right now. But I'm serious and would like to know ...

It was an attempt at humor - alluding (if you need to explain a joke...) to the unreal clarity of the visiblity the other day when looking toward the Olympic mountains (I personally love how the light makes them look different every day). I caught that Roger was jokingly using the "logic" of conspiracy theorists and flat-earthers who we seem to hear so much of on other radio and cable TV outlets. I think there was a "global warming is a hoax" allusion that the guest was trying to counter in there with his own silly statement that the mountains are actually a cardboard backdrop. Guess you had to be awake to get it in context. I thought Steve could have just went past the odd joke, isntead of trying to figure it out on the air as if it were a half-serious statement requiring a response. And hard to believe anyone would think it's a point of contention, either.

Now, back to your all-hit weekend. . .

Goldi -

Ok, thanks for the info. I was curious because as I became more cognizant, it seemed that Steve was very uncomfortable and was trying to get past it/ignore it. Because the rest of the hour was fairly normal so your explanation seems correct. I've had folks melt down on me in the studio and on the phone and know of a few examples of jocks having breakdowns on the air. One very well-known Seattle morning name from the past was literally removed from the station after having a nervous breakdown. Same station - an off-air creative services employee went off lithium and showed up in pajamas, wild-eyed and crazed. His family came to get him. He was/is fine with medication but I won't soon forget that day.

Not to mention all the stories most of us have revolving around drugs/alcohol/(ahem) unauthorized vistors, etc -

Ahhh, the wonderful world of radio ...

From a joke standpoint, did someone really have to ask if the mountains are really made out of cardboard?.......Ya'll in Seattle are suppose to have the world's best coffee. I would have loved a cup of Seattle's Best before reading that post....

Stormychuck - I gotta say it again ... I've experienced wacky DJ stuff first hand and Scher (the host) sounded uncomfortable. I'm not crazy ... altho you make a good point. All of this happened before my first cup of coffee. Anyone in Seattle knows it's hard to make sense of anything without that cup of damn good Northwest coffee.
