Kurtz, WaPo: O'Reilly may give up Radio Factor next year

There was a rumor about BOR giving up his radio show late last year but now it could be a possibility

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/21/AR2008102102522.html

"O'Reilly said he will probably give up his syndicated radio show, which has been far less successful than his television program. 'My duties at Fox are expanding,' he said, adding: 'I just can't work 60 hours a week.' "

The article said BOR was expected to re-up with FNC at $10 mil per yr...it says O'Reilly would prob give up the
radio show by early next year but he may do "commentaries". The radio show has been dropped in places
like Wash DC and Boston. BOR's TV show has been a huge success but the radio show, not so much.

Billo the Clown gets paid $10M/year to attract 4 million listeners? That doesn't seem like it is very cost effective for the sponsors.

But the topper is "I can't work 60 hours per week". What? It takes him 60 hours/week to come up with his asinine commentary? Most people could do that in 20 minutes....or less.

O'Reilly has two things going against his radio show:

1. He is a TV persona, not a radio one. People seem to forget that his TV career goes back thirty years, as prior to hosting the O'Reilly Factor he hosted Inside Edition for several years, worked for both ABC and CBS, and back in the 70s got his start as a reporter bouncing from one TV station to another. His radio show only came about with his TV show's popularity which until this I thought had reached its height around 2002 and 2003 and therefore it was really a part of the Factor franchise.

2. Bad timeslot. Why? He tried to go up against Rush. Since most of the first-tier stations are going to airing Rush, O'Reilly's show either gets shafted to late night or airs on the second and third tier stations(if at all regarding Chicago and now DC and Boston) where there aren't as many listeners.

Totally agree on the timeslot. Going against Rush is a showstopper from the get go.

His dilemna is that if he goes on after Rush then he is against Hannity which would be tough as well. He might have worked better in some markets between 9-12 Eastern time.

in neo ohio radio, beck is moving from whlo to wtam. the morning host on wtam becomes the 7pm local host. the pm driver on 640 becomes mid morning local. odd man out is longtime local kevin keane, canned by wtam.
no word yet who whlo will put on between levin and rusty between 8 and 11 weeknights.

Didn't WW1 have Joe Scarborough a few years back? And I'm pretty sure they also offered it in the same timeslot, too... Geez...

I dunno... with all the pre-Rush syndicated hosts (Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Dennis Miller, Neil Boortz, Mancow... heck, even Stephanie Miller!) -- still a dogfight. Not as suicidal as head-to-head with Rush, but more along the lines of Mike McConnell's syndicated effort. Or Sam Donaldson's.

Bill O' would have been lucky to clear the Salem conservatalk lot - displacing Mike Gallagher, no less.

I'm pretty sure Scarborough had a cup of coffee with WW1, though I think the time slot was something like 10 AM-1 PM. I think I saw it mentioned when they were kicking around if they would provide a radio simulcast for the MSNBC Imus replacement show that eventually became his "Morning Joe".

Of course, Ms. Ingraham used to do nights for WW1, a time slot now occupied by Portland's Lars Larson.
