KUSF's Online Cume: 15 (Fifteen) Listeners!

Not sure about KUSF, but other College stations often have reduced-capacity web servers to avoid getting into a higher-rate-for-streaming price structure. Too many listeners (over 100?) at any one time might result in having to pay higher royalty rates... and, of course, if you're on a frequency as KUSF *was* there's no limit on listening capacity. I wonder what USF has in mind as far as "increasing web capacity" and if it will actually go up (beyond 15 listeners or whatever) to justify the expense, given that the web-only versioin of "KUSF" apparently won't have much of the programming that the on-air version did.

They haven't even put their website back online. Their website still redirects to the press release from last week.

Plus, they never had a good web presence. Their Live 365 server could only accommodate 100 listeners. I didn't even know they were back online.

While it certainly wouldn't be a shock to anyone that the new online-only version of KUSF would fail to reach the audience that listened to the terrestrial station at 90.3 FM until it abruptly signed off on January 18 to make way for the relocation of KDFC, I have no idea how SF Weekly obtained this information. They claim that a maximum of fifteen listeners are tuning into KUSF's week-old Internet stream:

Didn't it have only 16 listeners on 90.3?

Check again when they have a regular website back up. I had to look twice to see the link to the Internet broadcast buried deep in the existing press release.

Not only is it hard to track down the link to listen online, but I've heard from several acquaintances and commenters that the station's current incarnation is quite poor and nothing like the "real" KUSF.

Considering the audience that KUSF appeals to rarely participates in ratings measurement, they could have had a decent sized audience that didn't ever rate. The impact of stations like KUSF is seen much more at underwriters and events than in Arbs.

I don't buy it. Even the stations, such as KPFA, that purposely drive away listeners have measurable listeners. KUSF has had nothing. As far as I recollect, only KPOO and KPFB also don't rate. Noticing the various letters to the editor in the Chronicle and various online comments, it seems that the only people who are complaining about the loss of KUSF are the people who had shows there.

Okay, I absolutely should not have laughed at that, but I confess - I did.
