Hey Guys:
Would anybody know the format of KUTE 101.9 before it changed to R&B in 1972? Maybe easy listening as QUIET FM 102 hence the KUTE calls?
Is it true that KUTE 101.9 went on air in 1948?
Thanks
T.J.
T.J.: It was easy listening...but I don't believe they used a name like "Quiet". Pre-1972, that kind of naming was rare in radio. Here's a Billboard article from 1972 detailing the proposed sale and format change for KUTE.

K-U-T-E doesn't really sound like "Quiet" in any case. I doubt even an easy listening station would want to position their music as "quiet"...relaxing, yes, but not quiet.
Stations in those days never strayed far from their actual call letters, but they did what they could with them. The "beautiful" music stations in the Bay Area during the 60s and 70s were KABL (lots of cable car sound effects), KFOG (fog horn sound effects), and KOIT (as in Coit Tower).
