KVCE Punk'd

How nice, someone who disagrees with KVCE's illegal immigration message hangs a large Mexican flag from the station's tower in Lewisville.

Now I'm all into freedom of expression but there are tactful ways of doing so. Trespassing onto private property to hang a foreign flag isn't one of them.

And they (illegal immigrants and their supporters) can't seem to figure out why a majority of Americans don't support their cause.

Well if they continue to show the WRONG flag what do they expect?...(have you seen Carlos Mencia's take on it?? de de dee!!) The Lewisville site is the 1KW nighttime site...(the 25KW day site is out in Wise County)...too bad it wasnt on when they started to climb the tower....can you say charred?

Re: KVCE Punk'd Itself

Probably Dan Patrick hung it up there himself for the free publicity. That seems to be the only type he'll invest in. He stormed the Dallas studios over the holidays and cut everything down to a bare-bones operation, and doesn't even have a sales staff in place, and it looks like he's run off his partner now. Yeah, 3 months on the air and the damn thing hasn't turned a profit yet, and hasn't hit #1!!! Wow, what a TRUE radio person. An independent owner who runs things like a corporation.

Reminds me of all the other recent upstarts, Mainstreet 990 for one, who want to take a market by storm, but refuse to spend a dime on billboards, commercials, promotions, etc or anything that might accidentally get the name out there...let alone getting people past the "who the hell is Dan Patrick?" problem.

Back to the flag issue, does anyone really think that:

A) Hispanics are constantly monitoring KVCE for anti-whatever messages (that alone should give them a 0.5 in the ratings, instead of the current 0.0.) They'd be better served monitoring Mark Davis or others who actually GET ratings.

B) Someone cares enough to do all the research to find out which tower is whose, and exactly where, and risks trespassing to do such a thing (especially in light of all the copper wire thefts...stations are usually well-aware of what's going on at the transmitter site these days.) Maybe the flag was hung from KDXX-107.9's tower instead. It'd make more sense.

C) Does anyone really care that much anyway? Assuming that this MIGHT be real, aren't there other ways to protest that are far more effective?

D) What's next...Spanish cusswords spray-painted on the First Broadcasting building? Dan Patrick "attacked" in an airport restroom by a band of Mexican skinheads? Heckling Hispanics planted in the crowd at a Patrick rally?

This has STUNT written all over it...right up there with "I Flipped for Jimmy Rabbit," or the staged protest on "WKRP," or the plot of the old movie, "Best of Times." Stale, weak and desperate stuff.

I agree that this looks like a KVCE gimmick.

The station has attracted zero attention here, and no audience.

Think about it. If somebody wanted to pull a trick on KVCE, is this really what an illegal immigrant would do? Has anybody been running around Texas planting prank flags? Is this a big problem?

No -- the only people stirred up about the Mexican national flag are the talk-show listeners.

Dan has been in broadcasting for 30 years. He knows the tricks.

Its a stunt no doubt. Have you checked his day in the legislature so far? He propsed a bill, and it was voted down with only one vote for it..guess who?

Does anyone know if this is being investigated?

At first, I thought this was someone pulling a prank on the station, but the more I think about it the more it smells like a publicity stunt.

Aside from "illegally flying a flag from something other than a flagpole", would there be any laws broken if someone from KVCE did this?

Can this station be off the air, because of this stunt?

That station should get ready for a visit from the FCC inspectors. Stations are required to "secure" transmitter towers...clearly this one is not secure if someone was able to climb it.
Secondly if someone were to fall from a tower, guess who's liable? As the TV report this morning mentioned, it is a very good thing the station wasn't transmitting as the tower for an AM IS the radiator in most cases.

Stations can do all sorts of things to secure their towers, but if someone is really determined to make the climb, what are you going to do short of posting an armed guard that would shoot any intruder?

Secondly if someone were to fall from a tower, guess who's liable?

It sure shouldn't be the station. Anyone who is dumb enough to try such a stunt deserves whatever unfortunate fate awaits them. Darwin has explained all this: the stupid animals don't survive.

Want to check and see how many times the 2000foot towers in Houston and other areas have been climbed by base jumpers? Secure? They are only secured as the gate lock and fence can do it...Anyone wanting to climb the tower will/can get to it....locks only keep honest people honest...

As for "guess who is liable"? I know of people who climbed into utility substations (drunk) and get burned as well as knock the station off line causing a blackout in an area.....and guess who had to pay? The utility did....just to make the lawyers go away. The drunk jerk or his friends who threw him over and then left him inside the fence never had to pay anything...or face criminal charges.

All other comments aside ... it's a pretty funny story.

As far as the comments go, it's either a publicity stunt or just a mere random act from some moron out there. You can't make me believe someone was ACTUALLY listening to that station and decided to do the research needed to find KVCE's tower to put a flag on it. I can believe a staffer doing it so the station would get some free advertising, or that it was a totally random occurance.
