KVEN-AM 1450 "The Boomer" Ventura, CA, Now Streaming!

They need a new copy of "So Much In Love" - Tymes. There's is from honest-to-god vinyl...scrathces and all! I called and told 'em so, and that the Cameo-Parkway is now available on CD. Very nice, w i d e secection. Nice selection of East Coast Do-wop. Good Luck!

Nothing like choice!! 8)

Hard to pick between WDJO Oldies 1160, KVEN, KVNL, RichBroRadio, or Hy Lit Radio.com.

Anyone know what KVEN's stream speed is?

BTW streaming radio stations sure have upgraded ... remember when many were stll going at 16kbps or 24kbps? They've wisened up!

I just used URL Finder in Replay AV to grab the url and put it in Winamp. They're streaming at 48kbps. Not great SQ at that bit rate, but not unlistenable. Sounds like a pretty good station.

This station originally streamed back in 2000/2001 than with all the RIAA and streaming commercial royalties they stopped. I see they're back up which is good. I was listening the day the switched from a news station to oldies.

AM Classic Top-40 is alive from Simi Valley to Santa Barbara...Oxanrd/Ventura has a neat little gem...Hope the "Boomer" gets their niche...Live in the streets and make mature ones feel young, again...

Since I'm not a sound engineer, I don't know what you're trying to tell us. But to someone who listened to Top 40 on AM radio "back in the day", KVEN sounds great!

The 5 mv/m of this station does not hit either Santa Paula or, worse, the Simi Valley daytime, and at night the coverage is limited to about 12 to 15 miles from the transmitter. Nowhere except right on the beach does it get out of Ventura County with a usable signal. It's probably the only useful format for the signal, but it's been oldies for a long time, and its last book was its worst in the last 5 years. Billings are off 50% since 2000, as well.

Thanks for the signal update David.. Radio-Locator is way off (then) on this one, even with the secondary band on their plotting...

Remember, radio-locator is "for amusement purposes only" as it says at the bottom of each page. In my experience, comparing measured contours with the RL contours, the true usable service area falls just inside the red contour. All that aside, it's a useful "first stop" resource, and a lot of work went into making the site, I am sure.

We're obviously hearing the stream right off of the board. One advantage of listening to AM is due to the limited frequency response of amplitude modulation, surface scratches aren't as noticeable as they are on FM or right off of the board.

If you were listening to the station on the radio, you probably wouldn't even have noticed unless you were listening on a radio that had wide band capability.

At 48kbps, you still get some of those sloshy, underwater sounding Windows Media artifacts, though not nearly as bad as you would at 20kbps or 32kbps. Compare RichBro Radio at 67kbps and Hy Lit Radio at 128kbps and you'll hear the difference.

BTW, I also heard So Much in Love the other day with the scratches. Never heard that extended intro. Must be an LP versiojn or something.

I also heard them playing a re-recording of Tell It Like It Is by Aaron Nevelle

KVEN dows have at least one thing in its favor over at least a couple of the stations you mentioned, live jocks, at least during some parts of the day. Also, I like the fact that they play local and regional hits.

BTW, just searched for KVNL and can't find a website or stream url for it.

Also, you might want to add KFXM to your list of good oldies stations with a stream.

OOOPs I meant WVLT Vineland, NJ!! Must've been the V's- Ventura and Vineland that got my brain tied up ;)

You're right about the voice tracks... They do VT pretty nicely at WDJO, only the trained ears of most posters hear can hear the difference when for example the AT actually gives the current temp in the Cincy area which they pre-recorded and the engineer works it in.

Re. KFXM I was disappointed the few times I've "tuned" them in ... Poor quality stream (my my what a Stream Snob I've become 8) )

With all the good quality streams/good quality programming out there, IMHO, music stations at low kbs rates are soon to become dinosaurs.....if they aren't already. For example, I feel CBS, CC, and others wasted boatloads of money with their dismal-quality 32kbs streaming.

Personally, I find KVEN's stream "borderline" in terms of what I'll listen to for music. For me, the quality of the on-air product is enough to trump the good-but-still-less-than-ideal audio That said, WDJO is as good or better with superior sound. Thus, I'll probably find myself opting for "Dusty & Company" more often for my terrestial oldies radio fix.

Agreed. WDJO is a great sounding stream, probably one of the best. As to ?SuperRadio's comment about KFXM, I agree. It's a little muddy for some reason, but it's actually at the same bit rate as KVEN's stream. Probably something to do with the encoding or the verson of Netshow they're using or something. I also agree with the comment about KVEN's stream being borderline for music. Were it not for the content, and especially the live shows, I would not include it in my oldies station playlist.
