KVEN/Ventura County To Drop Elvis, EWF For ESPN

February 1 will be the day the music dies on oldies KVEN (1450 AM), as Cumulus will be switching the station to an all-sports format with affiliation of ESPN Radio:
http://www.vcstar.com/news/2011/jan/27/kven-will-make-all-it-can-of-espn/

KVEN was already carrying Dodgers baseball and USC football games; now, Cumulus will forage for other live sports programming (possibly NASCAR) to air on the station.

So say goodbye to "The Boomer" and hello to "The Boomer" Chris Berman. ::)

Well, in my opinion, The Boomer has already been on life support since it affiliated with True Oldies and picked up Imus in the Morning. Even though I'm kinda disappointed with the format going away altogether, I'll just think of it as being put out of its misery.

Meanwhile, the 92.7 (apparently-soon-to-be-former Jill FM) trimulcast is shifting to oldies (details here: http://www.dailynews.com/lalife/ci_17218965). This makes me ask myself the following:

1) Will former Boomer listeners feel as though their void (if there is one) has been (or is about to be) filled?

2) Will The Boomer resurface one day as an online-only station or as an HD2 subchannel of a co-owned area FM station?

3) Will some other (preferably FM) station in the market (not necessarily co-owned) pick up the Boomer branding and format?

Re-read the article written by Richard Wagoner (who sometimes posts here). To paraphrase, Richard claims "92.7 FM" is playing "almost 100 percent oldies". That's if one considers songs like Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" to be an "oldie". Sure it's over 2 1/2 years 'old', but I think we all know that's not the kind of "oldie" 'The Boomer' was playing. Frankly, they sound almost the same as when they were JILL-FM, maybe playing a better variety of rock-leaning pop hits and less songs like "Turn the Beat Around".
