Whatever happened to their plans for new (and different) day and night sites, while scrapping the old four tower facility in north Austin? New 5kw day site was supposed to be along Hwy 71 at the Bastrop County line, and a 900w night site near Pflugerville.

I'm about to give up on am, if your not in the city around here then its useless, I have a fairly decent am portable radio, but I hardly use it very much at night, it just runs off of batteries. the only real station I can get at night is WOAI.

I would agree with you. With the exception of WOAI, the nighttime AM radio situation in the Austin/San Antonio is pretty poor. I actually have far more luck up in the dallas area with the midwest and western big dogs. From my Round Rock home, I can generally pick up WWL, KRLD, and KOA with little problems. KFAB often does a good job as well. However, the big dogs that often have issues down here are WBBM, WSCR, KMOX, WHO, WSM, WLW, and that 1090 from LIttle Rock (cant remember the calls).

By the way--was in Colorado Springs visiting some friends two weeks ago. At around 9pm, KNBR and KNX were booming in like locals, as was KFAB and KRLD. (directional signals) The question is this..how far in west texas would you be likely to pick up KNX or KNBR--im thinking somewhere between Midland and El Paso would be a good area.

I've found AM is much more listenable at night with a good portable radio that you can rotate on a table or the floor to optimize reception. I pick up plenty of AM stations with my Sangean CCradio and my Sony AM/FM/TV/Weather portable. I can regularly receive the Tulsa, Des Moines, Denver and New Orleans stations most nights with either of those. OTOH, I'm lucky to receive more stations than I have fingers on that hand at night on AM with the clock radios in my house.

Of course, if you've got a noise source in your neighborhood, like a transformer on a pole or a neighbor who uses power tools at all hours of the day, you're going to have trouble picking up signals with almost any AM radio.

Acually I found a pretty nice portable radio from a yard sale a while back, it picks up am realy nice. I'm out in the country so the nearest houses are about a mile from me, my am on my radioclock works ok, but it cant pick up the ticket 760 any more at night, it can only pick up kvet am.
______________

I posted this question a while back, but did they change there nightpattern? I remember a while back I could at least get them a little better than kvet-am but now its the other way around.
______________

From my experience in Round Rock, the KTKR pattern is heavily directional southward at night to protect WJR. I have known of people who can clearly receive the signal in Puerta Vallarta on certain occasions. 760 has never been audible up here after the sun goes down--normally listenable, but somewhat weak during the day.

The original reason for those plans was because former station owner Roy Butler wanted the land back where the current towers are because he could get a lot of money for it. Since the high tech bust, the land is not in that much demand so he is more interested in keeping Clear Channel tied up in a long term lease. CC decided it was better just to stay there and not spend the money.

Ah, yes, Roy Butler, car dealer and former Austin mayor/city councilman, remember him well from living there in the 60's. He must be getting up there in age now. I guess he still owns the land the towers are on? I recall in the early 60's that site was surrounded by farmland bisected by a two lane Hwy 183.
