KVET no HD?

KVET's HD Has been off for a long time now. Seems 105.9 is off now also.

Another note to KAJA, they need to up the power on their HD, It seems to be not very strong at all. I can receive KBBT before KAJA.

The HD transmitters have been very flakey to say the least. I think the local folks at CC have decided that the HD part of their station is a waste of time and therefore low priority.

That's sad. If HD goes away I may need to go to XM, I can't stand all of this overplayed hip hop that is around.

With the exception of KUT, I don't think a single station in Austin has been able to keep these HD boxes on the air. As one engineer said to me....."We're going to have digitial radio -- but it won't be THIS digital radio."

If the broadcasters want to show what digital radio can really do, somebody needs to sacrifice a signal to the cause.

One group owner needs to select one of their full power stations with marginal ratings and convert the entire bandwidth to digital at full power as a demonstration project. I was told by one GM that if the entire 2 mHz was converted to digital with no analog signal there could be nine digital channels. Nine channels at full power would show the public the future. But somebody needs to make the sacrifice.

Sacrifice? Broadcasters? PPPPBBBBBBBBBT!

Let's see....in a medium size market such as Austin, one broadcaster is going to take a valuable FM frequency and convert it to digital, thereby disenfranchising 99.95% of the listening audience. And if it's CC, all they'll have on those nine channels are nine Internet-ish streams that one can hear anywhere, since no one is going to waste LOCAL talent when no one, repeat on one will hear.

Naw, as interesting as the idea is, broadcasters everywhere are busy milking the last few ounces of profit out of the analog stone to invest, yes invest properly in digital. Especially when it's the mess forced upon the business by Ibiquity and it's fully-owned subsidiary, the FCC.

Like my friend said .... we'll have digital, but it won't be this digital.

HD Radio could work. I'm starting to dig Mega. IT sure does beat 2 hip hop stations. When your a web programmer dance is it ;)

The problem with HD radio is the technology that is being used is not the best one out there. IBOC is not the best choice, but it is the choice that Clear Channel and others invested in and it will take the next coming of Christ to make them change their mind on that and admit they were wrong. I would just give up on HD and stick with Satellite. The sound quality is probably about the same anyways (HD is supposed to mean high definition but really means "hardly different").

Yeah, I like the idea of Digital radio, but I'm not digging IBOC. I think that the FCC will review this soon. I hate the fact that Ibiquity is asking for royalty, and since the FCC has only recognized IBOC as a standard of Digital Radio, a broadcaster has no choice but to take an extra load on expenses. The technology is also very awful. I hear you have to keep entering a registration code that Ibiquity gives you in order for it to operate.

I believe that for Digital Radio to work, broadcasters need an entire new band in order to broadcast Digital. Have the existing Analog, and add Digital on another frequency. I have noticed that for AM, this is the only way to make it operate correctly. Having an AM station blanket up to 4 spaces on the dial with this Digital mess is causing a lot of chaos. FM is not as bad, but the coverage is not as great as I expected. I believe that raising the power on the Digital carrier will only make this worse. If you drive inside the 610 loop in Houston, you can hear KLTN's IBOC hash bleed all the way over to KJOJ-FM. A power increase will only make the FM dial as bad as the AM dial.

The FCC screwed up big time on this. I wonder which will be the first big company to dump this technology all together?

Half of the people around don't even know what HD Radio is. I talked to some family and they thought they already had HD Radio. I don't even think a lot of people know about the DTV Transition. But in Victoria they were all sold out of the boxes and no one could get them. They were telling them they had to drive to Houston or San antonio for boxes.

I guess someone heard it was off, its back on now.
