KVET's "Casting Call" For Morning Drive

If they're not careful, this:
http://www.radio-info.com/news/kvet-fm-austin-opens-casting-call-for-morning-host

.. could turn into this:
http://thehullabaloo.com/2011/01/28/overwhelming-interest-forces-wtul-to-halt-apprentice-program/

"Because the whole goal is to DJ, and we have two-hour time slots 24 hours a day, we don’t have room for 250 people," says the GM of Tulane University's radio station.

So, figure Tulane's two open shifts equal one shift in Clear Channel money. KVET management is going to get flooded.

And what's the point? The K-VET morning show has been stripped of most of it's relevant chatter and has been reduced to a music-intensive, commercial-intensive DJ show, playing the same old tired music they've been playing for YEARS. This is not what Bob Cole does best. Bob is best when the show is ALL TALK and he relates to what's going on in the community. NOBODY does that better than Bob Cole. Adding a female co-host does nothing to improve the show.

I 100% agree.

Make that 3 who agree. I'm sure there are many more too. Clear Channel is making a big mistake screwing around with KVET like this.

That's what happens when you hand off the programming reins to idiots. Mac Daniels (previous OPS MGR), for all his faults, at least knew what was best for K-VET and it's listeners.

Okay...what I was going to say is, who exactly are you calling an idiot, Tom? As one of the people responsible for the programming on KVET, I resent being called names by a disgruntled former co-worker hiding behind an alias in a public forum.

Chris Mosser

Personal or not, the numbers are going down, not up, for KVET -- 11th AQH in the holiday book, 10th AQH in December -- and a lot of longtime listeners are disgruntled, so some of the points Geezer (and I have no idea if it's Tom or that's just a guess) makes are quite valid. You don't nuke a heritage station almost overnight ... you ease into changes to try not to freak out listeners (and staff).

there sure are a lot of programming genius' on this board. Kind of reminds me of a UT football message board. Everyone is an expert... except for the fact theyve never played a down of college football in their life.

You underestimate us, dallasboyz. Anyone who has been in this business long enough has been a PD at some point... not that we would want to sit in that chair again. Not to brag-- but since you brought it up-- I've been MD, PD, ND, CE, even acting GM in my radio days.

OK, dallasboyz ... you're always flinging attitude on here so, you give us your assessment of KVET and what they should/shouldn't do.

Im not underestimating anything. However, the "chair" you speak of was completely different back in the olden days. Before major corporations, PPM, etc. The landscape has changed my friend.

You guys seem like a lot of "nobodies". or "use to bes". or "almost was" guys. who sit and critique everything about an industry you obviously weren't successful in.

Dont claim to be an expert. I see the 2 guys they have running it now have a history of managing winning stations.

Bob Cole has a history of horrible ratings over the past 3-5 years. Yet you seem to be championing him like he is KING RADIO.

I've never once praised Cole on here. Never once. Simply pointing out listeners are miffed. That is all. Judging by how touchy you are, I'm guessing you are in some way connected to CC's Austin cluster.

none.

I just think its funny to see all the experts throwing around their vast programming knowledge.

I dont even live in Austin. I did once. Not anymore. And I damn sure dont work for CC.

I don't call myself a expert, just a radio fan, but when KVET changed, I really don't like the new talk format. The music is about the same playlist.
Because of the change, I am listening to the big talker now in the mornings.
