KVI: Back to Talk?

"It's #10 in the Albany NY ratings." I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but being #10 in Market #65 is not the be all and end all of success but it is encouraging!

You know whats funny about this whole subject, it's missing Scott and Guru. Could it be that they are one? The same person? Seems both would have plenty to say about music on AM!

I believe, according to our resident experts, the oldies on 570 kHz was merely a "placeholder" (whatever THAT means) and it wasn't going to be for long anyway. Until a sale. Or a flip to espanol. Something.
I'd go as far as to say most radio listeners weren't even aware 570 had even flipped to oldies in the first place. Over the last year. I have mentioned KVI and people would think I've gone Republican until I explain they flipped to oldies and they'd be like "Sure they did dude.....Sure they did...."

But the point is, music CAN be done on AM, if that music is not available on FM.

I had mentioned in another thread here that I knew KVI was going to face an uphill battle by going oldies. I can't say I'm surprised that the decision has come to what it is. If you're an AM broadcaster in 2011, you had better damned well have something innovative to offer the public, or you're screwed! You cannot go up against the big guys or you're toast! It's bad enough when you have one direct competitor on FM. In Seattle you had two! If I'm a prospective client, I'll ask, 'why buy a time on a severely under-performing AM station when I have two other options which broadcast similar material and I can get better mileage for my dollar on those respective outlets?'
mega dittos

looks like the other armchairs already said it for me. no, i aint the poster: radio TV guru! sounds like you been missin' your suit and tie hero's rhetoric, huh? me too! maybe he was squeezed out in some hostile corporate takeover, like everyone else in the business.

KVI going Oldies was a no lose deal for Fisher. They cut the cost of operation by 70% and paid the bills with weekend paid programming. Station was inexpensive to run during the week and weekend talk paid the bills. Oldies combo'd well as value added with both KOMO and KPLZ and Fisher made big $$. KVI outbilled KIXI, KPTK, and even KLCK this year. The station was a financial success, so how do you make more money: Paid Weekday Segments!

This new idea is pretty inventive. Lifestyle talk is just another way to package paid segments during the week and make even more money. (Ever watched "NEW DAY" on KING TV, same concept) Talent was already in house so their is no cost and Fisher saves the music royalty fees to boot. Sometimes great programming is about ratings, sometimes it is just about making money. Fisher is laughing all the way to the bank.

Smart, very smart.

To the best of my knowledge, which is limited, still paying Brian Suits a boat load of dough. Could be wrong, but I think he has 1 more year?

Thanks, but while I concur, that wasn't me who said that (I believe the guy is 'Gregg') JFTR.

Again, thanks! Maybe we should try to find a way to resurrect some of these under-performing AM stations and have them offer programming that could possibly draw in an audience.
