KVIL REUNION A SMASH!

What, you didn't know about it? Nah, for employees only, 1968-now, this past Saturday at the Northpark Maggiano's. I think everybody that was anybody to KVIL's success was there, save for Larry Dixon, Jocelyn White, Lynne Haley, Judy Jordan and a few others. (Judy has cancer, as was announced...and undergoing chemo this Monday.) I can't possibly list everyone, but Ron Chapman was there, as was Jack Schell (who spearheaded the event,) Cat Simon, Bill Gardner, Jody Dean, George Johns, Scott LeTourneau, Steve Eberhart, Chuck Rhoades, Dave Spence, Jerry Bobo, Pat McMahon, Kurt Johnson, Ken Barnett, Bobby Sorrell, Michael "X-Rey," Jonathan Hayes, Bud Buschardt, Allison Bond, Larry Parks, Craig Slayton, Bill Mercer, Becky Ericson, Bob Morrison, Peggy Sears, Suzie Humphreys, Julie DeHarty, Terry King, Jim White, Jo Interrante, Wes Wise, Mike Nelson, Billy Bob Harris, Nick Alexander, Mickey Grant, Ken Montgomery, Ben Laurie, and about 80 more folks...with several making the trek cross-country. Quite a few showed that were from the "First Team," the ones there in 1960 when 1150 first signed on. A great time had by all. Lots of cool, old KVIL artifacts, a great multimedia presentation of old photos and music put together by Jack, and a touching "poem" delivered by a choked-up Chapman to wind things up. Hats off to Jack Schell for putting on a first-class event.

Listen for a tribute to KVIL on next Sunday's "Hi-Fi Club." www.thehificlub.net (I would have done it this week, but completely forgot that the reunion was coming up so quickly!!)

With Kurt Johnson there (recently appointed to PD of "Lite Rock 103.7,") I was hoping some of the sentimentality would rub off on him and make him go back to using the "KVIL" calls. :-\

That'd be COOL, ten times over! 8) Bring back the programming that made KVIL what it was!

Yeah, and the marketing budget, which was just as important as the music AND the "morning-drive-quality-in-all-dayparts" jocks! As was said by many at the reunion, "Nothing like it has come before, or since."

Strike up a chorus of, "It's a shame what's happened to radio..." :'(

Mike, Thank You for the insight to the event. I'm sure it was pretty special. As a guy who listened from 1980-KVIL to the KLUV days,,Alot of talent walked the halls of that great station,,,,wish I had been a part of that history,,I know a few of the folks, and have heard some great storys about the rest,,,Thank You Again,,,

Did they show any clips of the show "Sumpn Else" always liked the clip of the 13th Floor Elevator, where Ron was trying to figure out what that guy was playing.

I worked there for only a short time but it was definitely memorable. Sorry that I had to miss the shindig.

I sure would like to have a copy of some of those old "jingle-songs."

Maybe I'll get to them on "The Hi-Fi Club" sometime. That particular one is pretty long. Can't do this week as I am playing the ultra-rare "Staff Meeting" recording from KVIL, April 1989...which was a reunion of KVIL employees including the late Tony Garrett, Hugh Lampman and Ray Walker. That'll take most of the hour. More info to come...

thanks for the reunion update Mike.
did you get any pictures to pass on? or audio?

would love to enjoy seeing or hearing some "old friends".

it'll be good to hear Hugh Lampman's voice again. good work.

Thanks for the kind words! There are a few pics up already at Jack Schell's website, http://www.radiohomecoming.com, with more to come.

I also dubbed a few old KVIL jingles to play on the show...the classic Heller ones (thank you, Steve Eberhart) and a couple from the 1968-70 era ("Three in a Row.")

No, nothing mentioned about "Sump'n Else"...I guess Ron wanted to keep it strictly "KVIL." I approached him some time ago about doing a second "Sump'n" reunion, but never heard back. The first shindig in September, 1985, would be hard to match...plus those "kids" of the 60s are IN their 60s now, and probably not up to tearing up the dance floor as they did 23 years back! (or even 43 years back.)

I hope Kurt does go back to "KVIL". ANY station can be "Lite Rock", but there's only one "KVIL Highland Park, KVIL-FM Highland Park, Dallas-Fort Worth"... and I REALLY Miss it!

Was Valier Smith there? What is she doing now, if anyone knows. She had the greatest voice. MUCH better than Delilah!

I dunno...there's some elements of today's "KVIL" that would disgrace the original. Maybe it's a good thing after all to let the original one take its place in history. Think if someone tried to bring back Q-102, The Zoo or KNUS...it would always pale in comparison, and, as many of us so eloquently say on this board from time to time, it'd be "a shell of its original self."

No Valier Smith, sorry to say...and YES, an outstanding voice! And missed on the air. Last I heard, she's doing voiceover work.

Everything conspired against us for this event. Mainly our busy weekend schedules. But, ultimately, Valier was sick last weekend anyway.

We look forward to future events, though!

peace!
Douglas

By any chance does anyone know what Lynne Haley is up to these days? Is she still working in radio? Thanks -

Deliah is the PITS !!

When I listen to her, I just want to puke due to her sappiness.................

Sugar coated crap just spews from her mouth................

UGH !!!
