KVIL SOLICITING INPUT FOR START TIME OF CHRISTMAS MUSIC

Just got the survey today by email, and I told 'em like it is: forget what KLTY is doing...it's a CHRISTIAN station, for God's sake--Christmas music fits that format pretty well. For K-Ville, confine it to the two weeks before Christmas and that's it. And I reminded them that everybody's broke this year, and we really don't need our noses rubbed in the fact that it won't be that great of a gift-giving season for most people.

But you know it won't do any good...your Office Busybodies (you know, the ones who decorate the entire office whether you want them to or not, and wear Santa caps and yuletide sweaters starting Nov 1) will tell K-Ville to start playing Christmas music IMMEDIATELY (and will ask why it hasn't started already,) and K-Ville will succumb to it, and start banging the little drummer boy's drum the first week of November. The station also likes that false sense of security that a December "bump" gives them in the Arb's.

I know, bah humbug. But wasn't it just 90 degrees last week? Didn't everyone just take a bath in the stock market? Has the swimming pool even been drained yet? Isn't the 'back to school' crap still on the store shelves?

If you think that is bad, Mike, consider the Philippines.

They start celebrating Christmas (decorating and playing music) in September and end in January.

Mike, just another blunder from our friends at CBS radio...

I like to shop in the middle of the night sometimes and last night at the local WalMart the stockers were busily removing the Halloween candy on the shelves and replacing it with Christmas candy. So the little ghosts and goblins may get candy canes instead of jawbreakers, I guess. What really took the cake a couple of years ago was when I saw an older couple in WalMart stop pushing their buggy and then stare in disbelief at a 24-foot section of shelves, the centerpiece of which was a singing, dancing Santa Claus. An employee looked at the couple and said, "I know. I don't believe it either, and I work here." It was three days before Labor Day.

Neither the retailers nor radio care what the calendar says. KVIL isn't doing the mail-out to determine when to take the plunge. It's promotion, pure and simple and the decision of when the Christmas tunes begin (the exact day and time) is probably already locked in. Sadly, though, the dismal state of the economy may be all the more reason for stations like KVIL to kick it in early. So dittos on the bah, humbug Mike: Feliz Navidad, and a not-so-prospero ano nuevo. I'm already nauseous just thinking about it.

Do you complainers even listen to KVIL when it's not playing Christmas music?

Wow, 'complainer' is a compliment. I tend to think of myself as a hater. Where is the love? :-*

Sure, I listen to KVIL, anywhere from occasionally to infrequently, but it's all song-driven. Surf by, lock in for one song or two, flip away when a bad one comes on (a country crossover current will do the trick everytime) and come back by on the next cycle. It's not an anti-KVIL thing, it's just an anti-22 min stopset thing...oh, and I'm not big on their imaging.

(Ben, do you realize you called the station "KVIL" in your post? OMG...just DON'T slip up on the air!!! Wouldn't want to honor the station's heritage by accident!!! ;D )

Ok, then you certainly have a right to complain about (or hate) early Christmas music.

Those who don't listen... I don't understand what you get from not listening to a station, and then complaining that it changes to something else you're not going to listen to. ;)

BTW, the announcement this morning was that a special online streaming Christmas channel is now up on 1037litefm.com.

LOL! A friend of mine and I used to call it "EVIL" years ago. Then we both ended up working there. ;)

Im curious if Mike ever had the ambition to play "The Grinch", as he has the snarl and hatred of xmas already ;)

I kid mike, but I do agree with ya on one key point, the suits keep pushing out the holiday earlier and earlier, I think it peaked around 2003-2004 when you had wally world and tar-jay putting their displays up in early sept. Most of the retailers took the hint and have scaled it back dramatically.

I wish stations would not play any Christmas before Thanksgiving. Just to hard to handle "Jingle Bells" when it is 80* outside. Let KVIL start after Halloween and see what happens to ratings.

Im hoping KVIL is smart and waits until after thanksgiving..I need to have some breathing room....

I've always thought that KVIL playing 24hr christmas music (that's right. I didn't capitalize it) was just plain stupid. So many people either hate christmas or just don't celebrate it and people like that would like somewhere to go and be relieved of all the phoniness and hypocracy and materialism. A couple xmas songs per hour is more than enough. Don't they realize that they loose listeners that way? They lost me long ago.

I don't know how it is in the DFW market, but here in Phoenix, we have an AC station (KESZ) go all Christmas every year. They always start pretty early, right after or maybe a little before Thanksgiving, but it's always been BIG ratings grabber. Why not go that route when it's just so easy to do?

This year, KESZ has been shown up by Classic Hits station KOOL, as KOOL has begun their all-Christmas music before them on Oct. 31 until 8am Monday morning, and started again from November 7, and is playing for good until the day comes and goes...

I'm personally not much of a fan of Christmas music, and all-Christmas has prevented me from really enjoying my favorite station, as I'm sure the same is true for you. I always wondered, if stations played every other song as a Christmas song, how much better it could be. You'd get those Christmas music junkies, and not lose as many of those (like me) who still want to continue hearing their favorite music. We'd know that our stuff is coming up right after the 14th version of "Jingle Bell Rock". ;D

Every commercial has Christmas music in it from October thru the end of the year.

Since there are more commercials than songs, it seems like a moot point.
