KVMD Utilizing Distributed Transmission System

I saw that I was getting KVMD (physical channel 23, virtual channel 31) over the air with a much stronger signal on my TV. I looked on Rabbitears.info and found that it was using a distributed transmission system (DTS), with one transmitter on Mount Harvard. I wonder what’s going to happen with its low-powered translators, Los Angeles-licensed KSMV-LD and Ventura-licensed KIMG-LD (both also RF 23/VC 31)? I would assume that those translators are now redundant and their licenses will be surrendered.
 
DTS is a fascinating development in TV transmission. One upcoming example is KCWX licensed to Fredericksburg, Texas. It will operate six transmitter sites on RF Channel 8 to cover the Texas Hill Country, including the Austin to San Antonio corridor. And it will also use ATSC 3.0. Transmitter map with coverage:
