KVMR 89.5 MC

http://www.sacbee.com/entertainment/story/1072078.html

The "major metropolitan newspaper" did a fine article today (7/10) on 89.5 KVMR,
Nevada City, of which Brian Lee does a very good '50s oldies show on Saturdays...

Sadly, 18.5 watt 89.5 KSJC in Stockton {San Joaquin Delta College Radio}, my first
station, had to leave the air in the mid-1980s as KVMR increased its power...

Rachel Leibrock wrote the article, which leads to my next question:
As I see the Bee's 21Q site has been revamped, apparently Media Savvy columnist
Sam McManis' pic has been excised. No news of his whereabouts, or dismissal if
that's what happened, and he has not had a M.S. column in many months...
so where is he now?

18.5 watts? That is what I call a "low power" FM!

Happy Birthday to KVMR!!! As a resident of Nevada City, I am happy to see they have many festivities happening for the B-day. There was a great write up about the event in The Union.

proof that an independent, non-religious non-comm can thrive, even in these trying financial times for all member supported stations.

lol! Yup, KSJC was one of the last of the ol' 10-watters before the FCC said
"Increase or decease power!"...

BTW, KSJC had the chance to go 3-kw at 89.3 MC around 1982, but my understanding
was that then-new Delta College Prez Lawrence DiRicco would not go for the plan
developed by the previous Prez...

And I, also, congratulate KVMR on 3 decades of growth and success...

A side note: KVMR's Greg Gavin died suddenly on July 30.

I had been in contact with him just a few days earlier to let him know that his legendary father, Bill Gavin, had been elected into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. Bill Gavin had been a pioneering disc jockey in the 1940s and 1950s ("Lucky Lager Dance Time" on San Francisco's KNBC/680) and created the indispensable tip sheet that became The Gavin Report.

oh no. That's sad. Greg Gavin was a nice guy. I once did a show with him on KVMR. I was VERY nervous because I had never really been on the radio. I put a one hour comedy show together and he was very friendly and helpful.

May he rest in peace.
