KVOI Doug Martin Interview & AZ Daily Star Column

First of all, From AZ Daily Star:

http://azstarnet.com/news/opinion/g...cle_35a1c30e-179a-5730-9fed-7da0aa2f2cc9.html

Doug Martin Special!! LOL!!!!! What does religious fanatic Doug Martin know about golf courses, pools and spending? Sounds like a personal agenda to me. Martin will say anything as long as he can profit and he uses his radio station accordingly. Plain and simple, you can't trust anything this man says.

He was on the John C. Scott show today blabbering as if he knew what he was talking about. He doesn't have a clue as to what's needed in Pima county. AND JOHN C. SCOTT SAT THERE AGREEING WITH HIM! Of course John better kiss up or he will be off the air there same as at KJLL.

BTW, the fanatic is someone who is convinced that just believing in God and living a moral life is simply not enough. They feel compelled to engage in behaviors that demonstrate their faith. He believes that the magnitude of those behaviors must be commensurate with the strength of his faith. The more he believes, the more has to do to show it. So, pile on more radio stations. Never be thankful to God for what you have because it is never enough. i.e. ~ Moving K-Love to Tower Peak was a failure. I live in Oro Valley and I can barely hear it.

Wow! Did Doug p!$s in your cheerios? This seems to be one sitting at a station (Judy G who seems to have some sort of connection with KWFM) with 0 ratings throwing dog poop at a station that meets with some success.
Classy! Hopefully Judy feels more important and better about herself now. From what I know of Doug Martin he always seems pretty genuine. Shame on an owner of a station trying to improve its signal! Something which KWFM could use a few lessons on.

All of my dealings with Doug Martin have been positive. I don't think this is the forum to slam a local owner or any other broadcaster. If you have nothing good to say, keep it to yourself. I also agree with Mr. Martin on the issue that appeared in the AZ Daily Star. So be it...

Wow, you don't like a guy who stepped up and donated + raised money to open pools for kids in the hot Tucson summer? Regardless of how one feels about the City of Tucson and if business owners should or should not pull their fat out of the fire, there were kids that got to swim instead of bake. You ought to take a swim, you could use it.

Thanks Doug for doing that...and everything else you do.

Doug Martin manipulates and lies to get what he wants. You can't believe anything he says. He hides behind religion. He put me out of a job.

You say you don't believe this is the forum to slam a local owner or any other broadcaster. Well, the hate filled posts against the owner of KWFM have been going on for two years on this board and elsewhere on the internet. Inflammatory and damaging information goes up instantly and stays forever, unchallenged and unproven, to the misery and detriment of anyone who may be a victim. However, one day it may turn around and those responsible for slander and the damage caused will have to pay for what they've done.

I am not in the radio biz, nor do I live in Tucson (any longer) nor am I in the religion biz but after reading Doug's column and the 7 or so current comments I think there is truth and valid opinions on both sides.

Doug questions the use of public tax monies to support a recreation business that is not paying for itself (public golf courses). He also states that public pools are a valid expense and are required for those who can't afford their own.

Public swimming pools and the parks that usually house them have been considered valid operations by cities and towns all over America since the days when private pools belonged only to the very rich. I grew up in Tucson and of all the kids I knew (and there were hundreds) only one family had a pool. If we wanted to go swimming we went to Himmel Park or Flowing Wells. But there were lots of times we couldn't go so we simply did other things. Life is tough. Sometimes you can't go swimming.

Public golf courses are not usually thought of in the same manner as public parks or swimming pools but the argument could be made that they have as much right to exist as athletic fields, horse trails or mountain/desert preserves. The question is whether they are entitled to be tax supported or subsidized in the same manner as are other public facilities. I think the answer to this is no. If a public course cannot be self-sustaining it should be leased or sold to a private operator who can run it as a bonafide business so that it is not a drain on the public treasury.

There is a difference between kids who are generally too poor to have private pool availability and adults who generally can pay their own way at the sport of their choice. Having said that however I would personally hold the city manager accountable to establish reasonable business-based operations at any and all city-owned facilities so that each does not overly burden the citizens who pay for it through their taxes.

I notice that in the Phoenix area the more affluent areas no longer have public swimming pools as many residents have their own. Public pools are still available in the less affluent parts of town and that seems reasonable. We are having the same arguments here regarding public golf courses though and my personal opinion is the same - operate them at a break even or lease/sell them to a non-government entity.

Very well put landtuna. I just have a problem with how people in the radio community operate. Generosity comes from the heart and you do not look to profit or take advantage. The motive is usually clear. Doug Martin is a sneaky, dishonest person who hides behind religion. I've known and worked for him. Thats my opinion from where I sit.

Wow...I have never met Don, but will avoid him like the plague if I ever see him.... :-\

Awww...no It can't be...a media person, let alone someone with a normal job being fired? I've never heard of such a thing! Now that you shed some light on this I understand why you are soooo bitter and have hatred in your heart for Doug. I for one can't imagine being fired. Matter of fact I don't think I have ever heard of anyone being put out of a job. Hmmmm Anyone else ever heard that? (sarcasm intended - 23 million people looking for work!!)
I'm sure you sit here and are pissed at Doug because he "put you out of a job"! On top of that, your end game was to make a career out of working at KVOI? No wonder you were fired. Probably one of those people who sat and ate potato chips and played solitare and got mad when you actually had to do something, then can't figure out why you got fired!
