KVTI going dark in July?

Hey Guys;

I heard a rumor (from a usually reliable source) that Clover Park Technical College station KVTI 90.9 will be going off the air in July. Apparently the school's broadcasting program no longer supports enough students to support the operations of the station. If this is in fact the case, that is a shame--for a student-programmed college station, I'd say they are pretty good, and are actually one of my presets when I'm in a top 40 mood.

It would be interesting to see if anyone else has heard this as well--Given their reasonably powerful license, I'm surprised there hasn't been a partnership or another organization that would step in and manage/buy out the station.

This is a shocker. But then again this has become a alarming trend for a lot of struggling radio stations these days, non-comm or not, depending on its survival. KVTI does have a good Top 40 format and I hate to see it go away.

KVTI went Top 40 after KNBQ gave up the ghost in 1988 and became KBSG. I kinda think it's ironic exactly 20 years later, KBSG is now KIRO-FM and KVTI will have to bite the big one......

I hope KVTI would be exploring a time share with someone (KEXP?)- I realize KXOT did not last in that context, but it might work to try again. At least it would keep the license active and out of a religious broadcaster's hands!!! Please!

Now THERE'S a scary thought: Religious broadcasters wanted to pick up KXOT until someone else got into the act to keep that from happening. I can imagine they're not going to go quietly this time.

KUPS should get their mitts on 90.9 ASAP. That 90.1 frequency they're on down there is useless......

It's a shame that CPTC is doing away with the broadcasting program and is spinning off KVTI. But for the most part I-91 was just a top 40 version of Jack - music and liners running automated most of the time. Not what I call "compelling programming".

Let's hope the stick gets in the hands of a group who will actually do something with it - and not PTL 24/7.

Hard to believe this. KBTC-TV is turning off their analog broadcast today (4/20). Perhaps that was it.

Correction....KTBW is off the air on their analog, NW Broadcasters are reporting.

Your "usually reliable source" is not reliable at all. KVTI is remaining on the air with the existing format. The radio program is facing staffing cutbacks along with several other programs across the college. Any cutbacks have NOTHING to do with enrollment.

So let's dispel all these silly and somewhat bizarre rumors shall we? Repeat after me; KVTI is not changing format to religious in the near future. The enrollment at KVTI is actually up or remains steady. NOR does this have anything to do with KBTC-TV turning off their analog channel. (Which easily wins the most bizarre connection on the topic so far.)

I am on the advisory committee for the radio program, so this information IS reliable.

As of April 28, 2009, CPTC is no longer accepting any new radio broadcasting students, and radio broadcasting program courses are not being offered in the summer quarter class schedule.

Pierce-Thurston ranker update:

Tied for 11th 12-34 AQH, 8th in cume audience.

As for the program not taking any students over the summer, I'd say that's reflective of the cutbacks that were mentioned by Mr. Burgers.

Will Clover Park accept new broadcasting students and offer broadcasting courses in Fall, 2009 and beyond?
