Boy is that ever the question of a life time! I often wonder the same thing. Baseball, football, hockey, whatever; fifteen minutes of excitement crowded into three hours. Lots of stations break programming to run this stuff. Yet from what I see of ratings for sports stations they are generally in the toilet. Must be a money maker but not an audience maker....
