KWKH Shreevport back to normal?

It sure seems like it. I've been getting a good daytime signal in East Texas lately and tonight I noticed they were back with what seemed like their 50,000 watt directional pattern. There was little noticeable interference from XEYZ ("La Poderosa") in Aguascalientes, the Mexican station that had been plaguing KWKH here while they were operating non-directional with reduced power.

They've been absent here at my location in Northern Illinois for the last week or so....which indicates to me me that the DA is fixed.

Duh, I know, I'm not that far away and have been there many times. But I caught it too late so the typo stands.

I think I just heard KWKH again in VA, underneath WBBR, as I heard Charlie Daniels' "In America" about 1 AM EST. The signal varied from moderate to very weak and then it appeared to be gone.

It is the dominant signal on 1130 tonight in Houston. Been listening for the last 20 minutes and it has been steady with no interference. Wonder how far it's making it toward San Antonio? Be interesting to hear if it's causing problems for KTMR at daybreak or near sunset. I haven't caught a signal from KTMR since it moved from Edna to Converse.

KWKH was coming in fairly well in Lexington, KY last night.

Other oddities early this morning (EST)....

KGYN-1210 from Oklahoma was killing WPHT out of Phillie between midnight and 1 AM this morning. I usually listen to WPHT on early Sunday mornings (Mid-1 AM) as they have an interesting local (Phillie) trivia program. KGYN's old Country music was blasting them the entire hour...

Rarely heard KAAY-1090 from Little Rock has also been a "regular" here most nights lately after midnight. I usually only hear a very weak WBAL on 1090 at night.

And that Daytime-Only Spanish station in North Carolina on 1170 was on top of that frequency as it has been for several months now. Maybe they have a "Double Secret" Temporary Authorization to operate at night????

After being absent here (northern Illinois) for the past few weeks, KWKH was present before dawn this morning with a reasonably strong signal.

Heard KWKH here in Phoenix, Arizona tonight between 11:45 A.M. and midnight local time after a long absence. Was actually coming in pretty clear at times. At first, I thought I was getting CKWX because there was an interview and it seemed like a news program. Turned out to be America's Trucking Network, which I didn't know was aired by KWKH. But, the catch was confirmed at the top of the hour with a legal ID, and a weather report for Shreveport, Louisiana. After this weather report, the country music was back. This was when the station began to fade and static reigned supreme on the 1130 dial.

The question I have for listeners back east is that it appears, according to Wikipedia, that KWKH dropped America's Trucking Network last year. Also, the KWKH website doesn't promote the show. From what I found, America's Trucking Network only airs on 700 WLW. But I'm almost 100 percent sure that's the label I heard them give the interview was America's Trucking Network and it was definitely KWKH with the legal ID. Does anyone know if America's Trucking Network still airs on KWKH before 1:00 A.M. Louisiana time? Also, since KWKH disappeared for so long back in December, did they go back to their normal 50,000 directional pattern and then return back to the non-directional pattern? Or is this normal skywave coverage for their signal? Curious minds out west want to know! ;D

to belatedly echo ddsparxx's "catch" on 1/1, I caught a mix of KWKH and the NYC 1130 on I-81 around 7AM. Both were not really listenable.
Now 1 hr S of Tampa Fl on an old AM-FM-8 track boombox (VG tuner) KWKH is quite strong at times...

KWKH coming in good last night with ATN, and again tonight 10 pm CT in Northern IL with WBBR New York mixed in. By the way, caught 1030 out of Memphis after WNVR signed off and before the 'BZ fuzzblaster starting getting stronger last night and the new country station this afternoon on 1190 out of the St. Louis area before going to their night pattern. Also picked up the 1700 out of the Dallas area simulcasting with KLIF 570.

I thought KWKH had their DA issues worked out. I've been hearing them regularly during pre-dawn hours, but usually just in the mix as opposed to owning the channel. My takeaway from that is that they're back to operating normally.

An STA request filed on 1-13-2011 states the following:

"KWKH'S UNDERGROUND CABLES HAVE BEEN REPLACED, BUT WORK AT NEARBY TOWNSQUARE STATION KEEL(AM) MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE KWKH CAN BE RETUNED AND RESUME FULL-POWER OPERATIONS. FILTERS IN EACH OF KEEL'S SIX TOWERS PREVENT RERADIATION OF KWKH AND COMPONENTS IN THOSE FILTERS ARE IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPLACED. TOWNSQUARE NEEDS TO RETUNE KEEL BEFORE KWKH CAN BE RETUNED. TOWNSQUARE HOPES TO COMPLETE THE WORK ON KEEL'S FACILITIES WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. ONCE THIS WORK IS COMPLETE, TOWNSQUARE WILL PROMPTLY NOTIFY THE COMMISSION AND WILL FILE ANY OTHER APPLICATIONS NECESSITATED BY THE STATIONS' RETUNES."

Appropriate that the STA request for KWKH was submitted on 1/13!

As I said, KWKH has been in the mix whenever I've checked during the past 2-3 weeks before sunrise here northwest of Chicago. However, it's nothing like a couple of months ago when it was clearly owning the channel. I haven't checked evenings lately, however.

Overall, however, conditions in general have not been as good as they were a month or two ago, so that would probably explain why KWKH hasn't been as strong in recent weeks.

Watt, the reason for the new STA request brings up a question....

Would the retuning that's going on present an opportunity to snag KEEL? I have heard it here a couple of times before...but always on day power, right around sunset. 710 is a little problematic at my QTH, which is about 25 miles from WGN's stick. Still, now that they've turned off the buzz maker, WGN is easy enough to null. WOR is more often than not alone on the channel here, but still only fair at best. I have heard stuff in the background from time to time....usually the Cubans, but sometimes Kansas City. Haven't given it a serious listen lately, so I'm wondering if KEEL might be worth a try in light of the situation described in the STA request.

FYI...

I heard KEEL-710 just before sunrise in Central KY a couple of weeks ago with a fairly strong signal. This was the first time logged them at this location. As for KWKH, its been in the regular mix all along for many months with WBBR, sometimes dominating 1130. Around sunrise, WISN-1130 frequently mixes in, as well.

I'm getting KEEL very well at night here in Northern Illinois. Last night they came in quite well from midnight until 12:30 with virtually no fade. I wonder if they're running full power at night?

The opportunity to receive KEEl should be very good as they have been operating non-directionally as well with the antenna system renovations underway.

TOWNSQUARE MEDIA SHREVEPORT LICENSE, LLC ('TOWNSQUARE') RESPECTULLY REQUESTS A 180-DAY EXTENSION OF SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY PURSUANT TO SECTION 73.1635 OF THE COMMISSION'S RULES TO CONTINUE OPERATING KEEL(AM) WITH NIGHTTIME FACILITIES AT VARIANCE FROM ITS LICENSED PARAMETERS AND/OR REDUCED POWER IN ORDER TO CONTINUE PROVIDING NIGHTTIME SERVICE TO ITS LISTENERS.

ON JUNE 26, 2007, CITICASTERS LICENSES, LP ('CITICASTERS'), THE THEN-LICENSEE OF KEEL, REQUESTED SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO OPERATE THE STATION WITH PARAMETERS AT VARIANCE FROM LICENSED VALUES AND/OR REDUCED POWER. IN SUPPORT OF THE REQUEST, CITICASTERS STATED THAT ITS NIGHTTIME PATTERN WAS OPERATING AT VARIANCE AND REQUESTED STA TO ALLOW TIME FOR IT TO INVESTIGATE AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM.

THE COMMISSION GRANTED CITICASTERS SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY FOR KEEL'S REDUCED POWER OPERATIONS ON JULY 12, 2007 (FILE NO. BSTA- 20070626ASK). THE CURRENT LICENSEE ACQUIRED KEEL FROM CITICASTERS ON OCTOBER 1, 2007. SINCE THEN, TOWNSQUARE (FORMERLY NAMED GAP BROADCASTING SHREVEPORT LICENSE, LLC) HAS WORKED WITH ITS OWN ENGINEERS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM AND BRING KEEL'S NIGHTTIME OPERATIONS INTO COMPLIANCE WITH ITS LICENSE. MONITOR POINTS ARE BEING MAINTAINED AND KEEL REMAINS AT REDUCED POWER UNTIL ALL ISSUES ARE CORRECTED.

WITHIN THE PAST SIX MONTHS, TOWNSQUARE MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS WITH KEEL'S REPAIRS. STATION PERSONNEL OBTAINED NEW PARTS AND CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE WORK ON THE KEEL SITE IN PREPARATION FOR THE STATION'S RETUNE AND PROOF. ACCORDINGLY, TOWNSQUARE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS A 180-DAY EXTENSION OF SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO OPERATE KEEL(AM) WITH PARAMETERS AT VARIANCE AND/OR REDUCED POWER.

That obviously explains why they have been coming into Northern Il so well every night.

This morning at around 4am (CST) KWKH was dominating the channel here northwest of Chicago. WBBR in and out underneath.

I thought this might be a good time to check out KEEL, so I flipped over 710. Unfortunately conditions weren't that good, and even with WGN nulled, there wasn't much of anything. I did get snatches of George Noory's program, but it never stayed in long enough to identify. KEEL does carry Noory, but so does WOR, so I'm not sure what I had.

The other night I thought I had WOR until the local commercials & then finally a KEEL ID. It was well over WOR at my location & that's very unusual.
