KWKT-TV and KFXK-TV

I recently found out that KWKT (Fox affiliate for the Waco/Temple/Killeen market) is starting a newscast. The job posting on their website for the new newscast (http://www.kwkt.com/about/jobs/12113521.html) has prospective employees sending their resume to Neal Barton at KFXK in Tyler. Does this mean the newscast will be taped in Tyler with a local weather insert, or something of that nature? On a side note, both are owned by the same company and it has been reported that KFXK is also starting a newscast possibly next year with help from KETK.

It's possible that one station will produce both newscasts. The same thing happens in Abilene, with KTAB-TV (CBS) producing the newscast for KRBC-TV (NBC) as well. KRBC is owned by Mission Broadcasting, but they have a Local Management Agreement with Nexstar Broadcasting, which owns KTAB. KRBC has its own anchor staff and reporters, but it and KTAB share the KTAB newsroom - in fact, KTAB moved into the old KRBC building on South 14th a couple of years ago.

Makes me sad in a way - I used to work for KTXS-TV (ABC) in Abilene, and it and KRBC have a lot of history in the Abilene-Sweetwater market (KTAB signed on in 1979). Now KRBC is just a shell of its old self.

I think you're reading too much into this. First of all, KFXK is re-starting its own newscast in January. I believe they share facilities with KETK - the NBC affiliate in the Tyler-Longview market. I think they're going to have their hands full with their own project and wouldn't be able to produce another newscast for the Waco market. (it just wouldn't make much sense)

I think KWKT hasn't hired a news director yet and they're using the guy in Tyler to help gather contacts for when they do. That's just a hunch.

Comcorp will probably produce a regional newscast which will be simulcast on a number of stations. They just did this in Louisiana with pretty good success. They have a morning program and a 9:00 news program branded "Fox News Louisiana" and it airs on WGMB 44 Baton Rouge, KADN 15 Lafayette, KMSS 33 Shreveport, WNTZ 48 Natchez, MS/Alexandria, LA. Check out http://www.foxnewslouisiana.com/

They don't have any anchor jobs listed on the KWKT site ... just reporter gigs ... which lends credence to the theory that they'll prolly be airing a hubbed newscast that's fed in from elsewhere, possibly Tyler.

The network affliates in waco are pretty much hubbing stations in B/CS as well, why they would produce and pull from Tyler is beyond me. Id think they'd rather produce locally.

'Cause it's a lot cheaper to not have a control room, a control room crew, aset of anchors, etc., in each city. They just have to operate a bureau in each city. Kinda like Telemundo.

I'm not saying it's the best way to do things, but I guess it's better than not having a local newscast at all.

Thats true...but id think they'd rather keep it live and local instead of farming it out to tyler.

The exception being KBTX, whos newscasts are completely independent of KWTX's (though it has most of its internal operations run alongside KWTX, and clears all of KWTX's syndicated programming).

It is interesting about the Louisiana newcast. Perhaps that's what they're trying to pull off here. It's still odd though.
It's hard to know how competitive something like this would be, but if you have no competition at 9pm it might get numbers that are good enough. I would think they'd want weather people in each market. There are plenty of times that bad weather is effecting both places at the same time and live cut ins or live updates during the news would be needed.

Well ... Fox News East Texas and Fox News Central Texas debuted last night. Apparently the entire Waco newscast comes out of Tyler, as we expected, with a couple stories thrown in from their one -- yes, one -- reporter in Waco. Also, I'm told the show is taped. Anyone in Tyler or Waco catch it? Thoughts?

There was an article in the Waco Tribune-Herald on Monday about the then upcoming newscast http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/01/28/01282008waclocalfoxnews.html
as well a little critique online today

Personally I was disappointed in the newscast. It actually reminded me of my college newscast back in the day. Bad framing of shots, poor writing, green reporters, not really any production errors, but other than that I was back at the University of Kansas! The news anchor, Crystal Kobza, started every single line with "and." "....and five people were killed in Iraq.... and President Bush talked tonight about.... and a drug bust in Temple to tell you about now...." ,etc. It was apparent that she was the anchor solely on her looks (or at least I hope that's why because if she was the best one to choose from then KETK has got problems folks). It was good to see Scott Chesner although I don't know why he insists on standing just outside the frame. I don't think I ever saw his whole body in the shot, just a leg and ear every now and then. The one thing that irked me more than all others was when the sports anchor, Danny Elzner, was done with his report it randomly went back to the news anchor. No "now back to you", or "that's a look at sports" or anyother kind of tagout. All of a sudden we are talking about sports and the next second we're not. Seems like the basics of journalism to me! On a side note, I did notice it was taped and edited (that might be why sports ended so abruptly. The editor or whomever might have noticed the newscast was running short on time and decided to cut sports a little), but I don't think the average, non-TV person would.

All in all certainly not the best newscast (especially where here in the Waco/Temple/Killeen market we have KWTX and their fluent newscasts to compare too. KCEN and KXXV are fairly strong with B+ to A- quality). Hopefully things will improve the second night and even more so the third night. Just my two cents :>)

You guys have linked to two stories in the Waco Tribune-Herald without catching a key fact: the newspaper reporter thought the newscast was going to come from Waco. When you read this story: http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/01/28/01282008waclocalfoxnews.html
He clearly seems to think the whole thing is from Waco and that KWKT got their anchors to move over from Tyler.

He tries to cover himself with the next story: http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/01/30/01302008wactylerTVanchors.html
without ever once mentioning he blew it the day before. He owes the readers an apology and looks very foolish.
