KWKT Waco to start news department?

I think a lot of people missed this report, but yes, Nexstar is upgrading KWKT so that it can deliver more local news.

According to a press release back in May of 2015 regarding the change of affiliation in making KWKT 44 as the full-time FOX affiliate and KYLE 28 as the full-time MyNetworkTV affiliate, KWKT 44 will be adding more local newscasts in early 2016, possibly adding to a full-time local news department. If true, then this will be the 4th local news department, targeting Central Texas, but the 6th one overall, including news departments in the Brazos Valley (KBTX 3 – CBS/CW, KCEN 6 – NBC, KWTX 10 – CBS/CW, KAGS-LD 23 – NBC, KXXV 25 – ABC, KRHD-CD 40 – ABC and KWKT 44 – FOX).

Currently, KWKT 44 provides a half-hour weeknight-ONLY local newscast at 9:00 p.m. that’s produced and provided by sister station KETK 56 (NBC) in Tyler – Longview, TX. They will continue to provide one until KWKT 44 starts a news department of their own.
