KWOD-106.5 Losing Adam Carolla

Plays Well With Others said:
This was on All Access Today:

Carolla's Gone, KWOD Needs a Morning Show
We're looking for the next morning show at KWOD Sacramento.

Send air checks, bios, resumes' and other materials to Curtiss Johnson, Station Manager.

No phone calls and digital submissions ONLY, please.

KWOD-FM Entercom Sacramento LLC EOE

Yeah right. Does anyone even believe this ad is legit other than to fill certain legal requirements? I can't see this being anything other than syndication --cheaper and fewer management headaches, which fits right in with two longtime radio business pillars: Less and lazy.

Entercom isn't going to part with a dime to bring a local morning show to KWOD. The parent is in such dire straits that just a couple of years ago they sold their 1320 AM tower site and fired the entire local 1320 staff because they are so hard up for money. The blood inside the company is hip deep.

The AllAccess ad was in the section where you post for free. That is one of dozens of places where somebody in "Human Resorces" (who gets paid more than you do to do absolutly nothing and has even less to do with your on-air product or the sales of ads) places a gazillion no cost or low cost ads so that come EEO time they can trot out a thick notebook filled with print outs of all the wonderful out reach the company did. Also in that book will be print outs and tear sheets from web sites and small publications that target ethnic populations.

The real job is filled when somebody calls somebody they know (the old way) or now days as soon as corporate dictates to the locals which cookie cutter, one size fits all, bartered syndicated show they have to go with, and how much of each hour that corporate will retain for the placement of ads sold to brokers for ROS on a mix of stations designed to deliver a collective number, plus the ad slots reserved for the show provider (nobody cares - at the corporate level - about the local numbers, it's only your neck on the line and you are disposable.) The locals then get to figure out which is least destructive; try to peddle the couple of minutes left for what they can get in what should be a day part responsible for as much as half their spot cash flow - or, add to the spot load and drive away listeners thus further devaluing the product and driving the price lower.

To stray onto your secondary point.... For all intents and purposes there are no local shows in the Sacramento market that deal with news or issues. I'm sorry about Hogue, but there is just no audience there and he is surrounded by mostly "B" and "C" list national talent on a stick that is not heard in a good portion of the Metro.

There are several paid speciality shows and some of the outlying areas have wonderful old-fashioned radio that is owned and operated by (and cares about) locals. There live the remaining community talk shows that cover issues important to those towns... 1600 AM KUBA comes to mind as a radio station that seems to have been frozen at a time when radio was radio (no, I don't have any connection to the company other than that they are fun to listen to) but the sad fact is that the very first thing the corporations did when they took control was to destroy radio as a destination for news, conversation, music or information about my community.

The next generation has already moved on to new platforms far more in tune with their lives than radio.

You are incorrect on most your views.

I cannot speak to Entercom's budget, and I would agree that likely the ad post on Allaccess is for EOE EEOC and "CYA" policies.

However, I know people get hired from Allaccess postings all the time...me being one them many times. So the fact that a job posting is free is irrelevant, and more important you are wrong to assume that no one gets gigs or hired from Allaccess job postings.

#2 Armstrong & Getty are quite local and do discuss local issues/politics and things that effect listeners in the market. Also, KFBK in AM Drive has the news and a bit of commentary, most all dealing with local news and issues.

If you qualify your remarks by making this statement about the FM side, then I may concur with you, but the broad brush is off target, or should I say, way outside the borders.

Finally, the other platforms? Yes they have made a dent into radio, as has say cable into network TV, but if your keep up on the trends, satellite is in trouble, why? Not enough listenership, and cost prohibitive, though they got a nice infusion of cash from John Malone a few days ago. Also, today I think it was reported that Satellite radio is now in 5% of all vehicles, wow, that is some "moving on"...radio is in 100% of cars.

Don't confuse quality with quantity, you and I may have some common ground there, but don't make big pronouncements when you cannot back up your facts. Ipod? Well I heard this talk 20+ years ago when we had the "walkman"...radio would die.

Technology will not be the death nil of radio, radio's owned self inflicted wounds will kill radio.

Radio is still the best, cheapest, most accessible, and intimate form of broadcasting and vehicle to reach listener's.

I too get frustrated by radio owners and operators, but we must be clear and accurate on the issues, or else we come off as ranting loons and get discounted by those people we are trying to debate and get to change their business practices and see the light as to how to really make and do radio successfully.

Thanks for reading.

According to MT1: "Entercom isn't going to part with a dime to bring a local morning show to KWOD. The parent is in such dire straits that just a couple of years ago they sold their 1320 AM tower site and fired the entire local 1320 staff because they are so hard up for money. The blood inside the company is hip deep". Actually, they let go PM Drive host Enid Goldstein and Scott Forrington, one-half of the AM Drive team "Scott and Simms"due to extremely low ratings with their "Left Channel" format. They moved the other half of the "Scott and Simms" team, Andy Simms to KWOD where he is employed as a full-time midday host. The station has made more revenue as ESPN 1320 than they ever did with the left-leaning Talk format. Being in the BUSINESS of radio, Entercom would have no reason to let anyone go at the Talk station had local radio listeners embraced the format. That, plus no local businesses wanted to advertise and be associated with the station.

Gee I wonder why that is so? But I guess all of us will find out during the next four years of the new (old)blood in Washington, DC. But don't look at me I didn't vote for the guy!

his ratings arent much better on KWOD... prolly shoulda just let him go

You could put anything on KWOD right now and it won't pull numbers. Sims is a top shelf talent and deserves more than 12 second intros to do his thing.

I wonder if they'll team up some of the existing talent on the radio station. Or they could always go old school and bring back Shaun and Jeff or Nick Monroe in the Morning.

Sims is top-shelf talent? You're delusional. In the Fall book, he was 20th out of 21 rated stations in his time slot. The only station he "beat" was Spanish. 20th out of 21. A guy who's NEVER gotten any numbers can hardly be called "top-shelf". Small market hack, maybe.

You're using numbers to judge a mid day jock on a music station? A jock in this time slot is responsible for maybe 5% of the content of his/her shift.

Use your ears to judge talent, young grasshopper

Young? radiochick1 doesn't sound young at all. Middle-aged at least. Probably fat and single, too.

Simms is all right, he's just better with someone around to point him in a direction.

The morning show gig was posted on AllAccess.com, which means they are looking for a new morning show...
