Our Last Goodbye
KWOD has been playing Alternative music for Sacramento since 1991. Those were the days before the term “Alternative” was actually coined by some supposed marketing genius somewhere. Then most people just called it Modern Rock and we played bands, like the Pixies, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and The Clash.

There have been many great years, like the explosion of the Grunge era and the creativity of the late 90’s. There have also been many passionate and talented people sitting behind the microphones at KWOD, turning you on to new artists and songs, playing your favorites of the years past and letting you know about what was going on with those bands and the people like you, who loved them.

That is why it is so difficult to tell you that, after 18 years, KWOD is coming to an end. The last few years have been very challenging for KWOD; as it has been for the world of Alternative music, and the radio stations that play it, in general. The severe downturn in the economy over the last year has affected many people and companies. I’m not telling you something that you don’t already know. But, perhaps you didn’t know that, while we are a radio station, we face the same circumstances as so many other organizations today… the challenge of running a business profitably. We have taken many steps over the last few years to improve things, but in the end they have not been enough. We’re proud of what KWOD has stood for over the years. And, we’ve had fun being part of it.

Some of you may want to blame this decision on some faceless corporation. While KWOD does have a parent company, it’s not how it came down. This was a local decision that was both difficult and personal. We had to finally admit that our best efforts, over a number of years, were not going to produce the results we needed.

So, on Friday, May 22nd at 9am…KWOD will be no more.

Your loyalty to the music, and to KWOD, is more appreciated than any of us can effectively express. So, we will leave it with a simple, genuine “Thank you”…

So that pretty much cements it that CC's new stick will be either Alt or an Active/Alt hybrid, right? Or CBS finally finding a niche for the Zone to fill. Sad though... some really good people at KWOD, hopefully whoever flips their stick in that direction has local talent and gives Sims and Hawk and Rubin some consideration.

Any news on what KWOD will be doing at 9:AM? Will they simply sign off the air and sign back on next week with a new format? Or will they Stunt during the Weekend and sign on the New Format next week? Or will they simply change Formats exactly at 9:AM? And what type of format will Entercom change it to? I doubt any other type of Rock Format since KSEG-96.9 is Classic Rock and KRXQ-98.5 is Active Rock. Unless they are considering AAA? What other format is lacking in Sacramento? URBAN AC? NEWS TALK on FM? Another COUNTRY MUSIC station? And finally, What will happen to those prized KWOD call letters? Will they disappear or will it be utilized in the new format?

Or how about ESPN 106.5 KCTC-FM? Would moving (or simulcasting 1320) their Sports Format to the FM Dial help them against KHTK-1140?

Hey guys,

Another website (I’m not saying who) is reporting that entercom registered 1065thebuzz.com, and set up a twitter account for “The Buzz.” It also believes that, come tomarro, you will see the first 90’s station.

As I don’t live in Sacremento, or California, for that matter, if someone could let me know what comes on the air at 9AM your time tomarro? I’m at: [email protected]. Thanks.

This is correct. 90s, and a sort of next generation for The End listeners. Makes sense in that you'll keep listeners in the cluster, so to speak.

Also, live all day. Full morning show and air staff through the day --nights, I don't know for sure. They'll go live in a month. (Wonder if Monica Lowe will be back on the air.)

This will make an interesting test case for "live and local" vs sterile and removed, aka iPod radio, voice tracking, etc. Already, the two phoned in radio stations --92.5 and the Zone-- are taking a beating, in part because they've been neutered and in part because The End is stealing audience. I wonder how much of that is because it has a live air staff (in most dayparts) and a PD to nurse the station in those places where all stations need attention from time to time. There's no such PD at CC or CBS. If it turns out the juke box is losing to the juke box that actually has a staff, you begin to wonder what the iPod-ers will do at at what point those stations will be completely irrelevant to the listener. To me, they're already irrelevant and if they turned the signals off, who'd really care?

But I just check out that website and I get a Rock Station from Sheboygan, WI. WHBZ-106.5

It looks like The radio kid is right. I found the Twitter Site http://twitter.com/sacbuzz However I am puzzled at their new website reported as right now it directs you to WHBZ-106.5

Generally speaking, the 80's stations (from the beginning of this decade) focused on Rock/New Wave -- instead of playing ALL the 80's hits -- and most failed.

Will the 90's stations make the same mistake? With a name like "The Buzz", I'm inclined to think so.

Is this essentially going to be an all-90's version of KWOD?

From what I remember of the late 90's and early 2000s this radio station's playlist has always been for sale!

Tough for the last few years? No S&%$! They can't take money for spins anymore!!!

RIP Indie Promo WHORE!

I can't believe they lasted past 2003 or 2004.

Peace out Sac Town.

I am surprised that Entercom didn't move KWOD to its HD-2?

It was just reported on KOVR TV 13 on its 10:pM News of KWOD to 106.5 The Buzz. It's official, All 90's 106.5 The Buzz!

Good lord, we already lived through the nineties and heard all the music countless times. Does anyone really want to keep hearing the same old stuff over and over? (yes I know some do...I just dont) I hate nostalgia, I wanna hear what's new

We need an AAA

I don't mind nostalgia. Problem is most radio stations play only the same old hits. I have yet to hear "Paradise Theatre" song by Styxx or "Pressure" by Billy Joel, "It's Raing Again" by Supertramp, etc. on the radio. I know those are 80's but there are many songs, regardless of which decade they are from which are not played on the radio. That is why the IPOD is so popular.

What Will Become Of The KWOD Calls?

KCRA Channel 3 has now reported the news. The question now is.... "What Will Become Of The KWOD Call Letters"? They have been in place at 106.5 since 1977!

This actually kinda makes sense. Alternative's biggest problem is that it's courting listeners who no longer listen to radio... sure the target for this "Buzz" station has its iPods and whatnot, but at least they grew up as radio listeners so it's not that big of a stretch to win them back as long as they provide a compelling product. I hope they have a VH1 vibe to their presentation... whenever they do one of their "Top 50 Songs" countdown specials, the overwhelming feel is "fun". That's something radio has gotten away from and there's a huge void in this market for a station that's actually "fun" to listen to.

For all of its faults, I listened to KWOD quite a bit, but I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy this station.
