KWRD-AM/Henderson -- Sale Completion?

The FCC still has yet to move on Jerry Hanszen's purchase of KWRD-AM/Henderson from Jerry Russell. Will this sale consummate sometime this century or will Hanszen forever run a station he'll never outright own?

Also, on a related note, is the FM translator for AM1470 up and running now?

Something should have been done on this sale long ago. It's a mystery why the FCC hasn't approved the transfer to a reputable owner like Hanszen, since it would serve the public interest. He's certainly preferable to Russell, who has destroyed virtually all the stations he has touched. Besides, as we've discussed, he's really a pirate radio station owner since KOFY 1060 is still on the air illegally.

About the translator, K280FH 103.9, I haven't been over there recently but I'm pretty sure it's on. They have a pending application to move it a tower on the north side of town, still with 99 watts but with a slight increase in height to 144 feet.

Couldn't agree more.

It looks as though the translator antenna will share stick space with the existing AM tower behind the studios. Not completely sure, though. Looks can be deceiving.

Jerry told me that he is waiting for FCC approval to move it to a nearby tower owned by American Tower Company. It seems the Commission is moving very slowly on translator move requests, even when they are very straight-forward, like this one.

Since the AM tower has RF on it, and FM antennas like to be grounded, it isn't as easy as it sounds to put an FM antenna on an AM stick. Of course, it can be done, but it requires an iso-coupler to keep the FM antenna from shorting out the AM tower. Of course, he could put it on his small STL tower next to the studio, but it already has a lot of stuff on it, and isn’t very high.

I think you're right, Chuck. Seems like it would be better to pay rent than run the risk of frying everything.

He'll also get a bit better coverage too. With FM, height is everything. At low power, it can make all the difference in the world, even if it is just 30-40 feet. ~100 watts at 144 feet should do a nice job of covering Henderson.

I just noticed that the FCC has approved the application for the move.
