KWRD Henderson back on the air

KWRD 1470 Henderson is back on the air, with what sounds like a homegrown "Pure Country" format. Glad to hear one of the stations I jocked for get back on the air after Russell killed it.

Now if Community Broadcrapping Group would sell KZEY-KOFY... What the heck is going on over there? (nothing)

The Phoenix arises from the ashes.

Who is running it? Who owns it?

Will it be restored to the "Hometown radio" format that Russell tortured mercilessly for years before putting a bullet in its head?

Im glad too, hopefully he or they will bring the station back close to what it was. I never knew a community that relied so much on the local radio station for news sports and weather.

Too bad CC keeps KBGE 1240 wasting away simucasting 96-X instead of selling it.

BTW Someone on the board last month posted KWRD was sold, has anyone found any FCC info on who has bought it? Thanks!

That was me. Some time ago I had a nice phone conversation with the guy who was trying to buy it. I don't remember his name, but seemed like a nice fellow who actually lives not too far from the station. I got the impression that it would be "mom & pop" community oriented, the way a small town radio station should be. More power to him. I wish him well.

Incidentally, I've noticed that KWRD actually sounds pretty good. It hasn't done that in a long time. AM can sound good, especially if they don't try to limit the audio bandwidth for IBOC.

Failure to plan on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part.</P>

And Access 1 is wasting KFRO 1370 simulcasting 104.1. It's sad to see the one time "Voice of Longview" in such a state.

The latest news is it is off the air again due to transmiter problems. That's probably caused by years of neglect, and not the fault of the new owner. I understand it will be back shortly at reduced power.

I doubt any East Texas (or Shreveport) station will go IBOC soon unless someone puts a new station on the air. The majority of the AM's are running on 20+ yr old equipment.

When I worked for KGRI/KWRD they were using a Marti compressor/limiter for the AM chain at the studios on the hill. I dont know what they had at the old studio/xmitter site (Chipper was renting the old building out as a Lawmower repair shop!)

The station that has gone down the tubes audiowise (besides KOFY) is KFRO-AM which used to sound great running AC and then Oldies in the late 80's-early 90's in Motorola AM Stereo. KWKH also used to broadcast in AM Stereo when they were still owned by Great Empire.

You're probably right about the AM's. I understand that Waller is thinking about doing it on the FM side. I really don't see what it buys them at this point, other than bragging rights.

Frankly I miss AM stereo. I've heard it on some late 80's car radios and was quite impressed. Just because AM usually sounds dreadful, doesn't mean that it has to sound that way. In fact, it used to sound quite good.

True - Unless the people behind HD can make it cheaper than XM-Sirus and get it in millions of new cars as standard equipment. I dont think HD will be a huge success in the long run, it just started too late.

My parents used to have a mid 80's Chrysler New Yorker (K-Car)with a AM stereo radio and was always impressed at how good AM Stereo could sound on a stong signal. KOMA-AM in OKC doing oldies and KNIN 990 in Wichita Falls (moved to Farmersville) simulcasting it's CHR sister FM sounded great. I've downloaded IBOC AM samples and it sounds like a 32K Mp3Pro or AAC+ stereo stream on Winamp. Thats fine for cheap PC speakers and laptops but you will really hear digital artifacts on a high power car-home stereo.

Back on topic - KWRD has been off the air all day (saturday).

Speaking of which, I once had a car that had the AM stereo reciever to it (it was a 1990 Infinity, by the way) sounds awesome (then my car got reposessed, thanks to my back-stabbing co-worker that caused me to fall behind on the notes, that knucklehead!)

KWRD now on the air and now it's not. It's gotta be technical adjustments. It's about time the new owner came to Henderson, TX and bought it from that buzzard (Russell). At least it's worth the money to get it back to full operational again. I wish the new owner the very best of luck in restoring "hometown radio" back to Rusk County. KZEY and KOFY, you are next!
