KWRD Henderson

A friend tells me that he heard station manager, Philip Burd on the air doing a "beg-a-thon" for money to help pay for an attorney. It seems that his agreement with Jerry Russell to purchase the station has blown up, and Russell is trying to take it back. I can't say that this surprises me, but it certainly disappoints. Has anyone heard anything about this?

The truth to that sad commentary is not at all surprising to me. I hope Philip wins the heart of all people to keep KWRD in tact and far away from Russell's clutches because he (Russell) has already used and abused every radio station he owned or LMA'd to its lowest level of life never to be resuurected again. A sad example of his recently deleted stations in which he was trying to bring back to life - KOFY. As much as I know of KWRD (and also a native of Henderson, TX), I just hope Philip gets one hell of an attorney that can bring Russell down and in the process, deny him of any re-owning. If only I knew of the current phone number at KWRD-AM, I might be able to talk to him personally. Anyone that know the number of the revived 1470, send me an e-mail.

I spoke to Philip today. The news is not good. It seems J.R. has legal means in place to repo the station on Friday. Philip has legal council, but it sounded to me like there may be a point of "diminishing returns."

It is a very sad situation.....

That's unfortunate....for Phillip AND the city of Henderson.

If indeed this gets nasty and Russell takes the station back over, I'd be very curious to know what he's going to do with it.

I'm concerned he played Phillip for a sucker in that Phillip's money is what's breathed new life into AM1470.

If Russell put as much money and effort into making the stations he has grow as he does trying to hang on to stations he's ruined, there would be no end to what he could accomplish.

What is the guy's problem?

Well put, nuzguy....well put.

To answer your question, I'm afraid we may never know.

Strange thing happened last night....

I dreamed that a man who had more money than he knew what to do with bought KWRD out from under Phillip for MORE than what ol' Russell was asking for, turned around and GIFTED it to Phillip and was asking me for advice on how to upgrade it, automation system, etc.!

If ever there were a dream that could come true, I'd love to see this one do it.

I'm told that, today (Friday 5-16-08), it is a satellite or pre-recorded feed of bluegrass music. No Philip.

I'm out of the station's range at the moment, so I have not been able to confirm that.

Any late word on the fate of AM1470?

I don't know. It is on the air. Right now, Sunday afternoon, it sounds like the six disk CD player running Gospel music. Nobody's said a word, and I missed the Legal ID time. Someone said they hear Philip on it on Satrurday. I don't know if that was live or pre-recorded.

Maybe he was able to work something out.

For Phillip's and the city's sake, I sure hope so.

Philip was on the air live today doing his usual schtick. I guess he managed to work something out, at least for now.

Sure hope so. Heard any on what it was that caused the rough sailing?
