KWRW abandoning Rusk for Tyler-Longview

It appears that KDOK Kilgore (and its subsequent translators) will be getting competition from the soon to move KWRW-Rusk (Classic Hits 97-7) as it applies to leave Rusk as its COL and move to Troup, serving Tyler-Longview proper.

The first question that comes to mind is with the Palestine translator, will it be subjected to a move as well?

If not, will K280CL be able to pick up KWRW OTA from its new location? If so, maybe a move of 103-9 to Rusk (or the vicinity) to make up for the lost coverage areas of 97-7?

Really surprised to read that the Whitehead's are interested in pulling 97-7 out of Rusk. It's been there spinning oldies for quite a number of years now.

Very interesting. First I've heard of it and I check The FCC Daily Digest every day, I guess I missed something, That may make KEBE in Jacksonville a better local property. Then again, maybe not.

Probably the worst thing that will happen is both stations will get better. Competition is like that. KDOK is pretty much a Kilgore-Longview station. Troup is more or less equidistant from Tyler, Henderson and, Jacksonville. A bit further is Kilgore. Longview is still farther away. Unless they are able to pull off a major upgrade, it will still be a rim-shot to almost everywhere. Troup is less than 2000 people so I doubt it will get to much local support. Since they also own the local Rusk newspaper, the move may not go down well with their current supporters. It will all come down to programming, as it almost always does.

The proposed location is actually on the east side of Tyler, near HWY 31. That is not very good news for the translator we use for QX-FM in Tyler on 97.9.

I doubt that KWRW can do an upgrade because of KALK in Winfield, unless some frequency shifting happens. As it stands now, in Longview, 97.7 is a mashup of KWRW and KALK. Moving the transmitter to Tyler just decreases the spacing.

Will KWRW keep the classic hits format? Seems that we are already at saturation with KDOK and KOOI, plus a lot of crossover with KKTX and KTAL. Hard to believe that just a couple of years ago we were complaining about the lack of a classic hits station in ETX.

And I believe that KWRW currently runs Spanish language programming on the weekends, so will that continue after the move? Or could KWRW become full time Spanish language? Just some things to think about.

Chuck, will KWRW be able to shut down or forcibly move the 97.9 translator?

As far as I can tell, it shouldn't affect 97.9 too badly, because they are also filing to move from 97.7 to 97.5. The locations appears to be the old KTPB tower, now used by KZLO. There is also a downgrade in power involved. I guess time will tell, but I'm guessing their coverage in some parts of Tyler will be similar to what KZQX has north of the loop in Longview.

I haven't found any evidence that KALK has filed for a downgrade, or intends to be bought out. I guess the saga will continue....

Along with KALK, I wonder if KQHN "I97.3" Waskom with it's tower in downtown Shreveport is also too close to the KZLO tower where KWRW wants to move to, about 75-80 miles. And if KWRW moves, what format could they switch to..about the only format in East Texas now is Active Rock, which KKTX dropped.
