WOW no one plays that one anymore.

So you tune in to a classic rock station, and they play classic rock. Why should that surprise you?

You want to hear something you've never heard before, tune in KKGO, or some other format that includes currents.

The Sound has already done everything it's going to do with music. They're not going to play the Daughters of Albion, as unique as that might be. So they're going to bring a familiar personality back to the airwaves. Familiar personality playing familiar music. That combination usually leads to good ratings, and that's what radio is all about.

It's boring to me, do you not get that???? ALL LA music radio is repetitive and not enough variety FOR ME. But you've heard this already from me because you're a smart guy. And who the HELL is Daughters of Albion? (Think I'll Google them).

The list below is, TO ME, variety. Don't bother telling me what I already know, that the SoCal demos won't allow a playlist like this to work. Some people complain about over the air radio and those who do go to their Pandora, Spotify, iPod, etc etc. Not me, I don't need to do that. Some of the tracks below, actually many of them, are on playlists of KROQ, KYSR, KLOS, KSWD, KBIG, JACK-FM, even KRTH. This from an OTA station I love:

Mister Fan, KSWD was "inspiring" in 2008 when they played a lot of artists who were seldom heard on other stations. It took about a year for the format to evolve into the same ol' classic-rock hits that we can hear on KLOS and KCBS-FM. I just saw on KSWD's website that the "Live At 5" segment at 5 pm today will feature live tracks by---wait for it---Led Zeppelin. And a few minutes ago KSWD played Hotel California. *Yawn*

You are correct, Steve. They had a good start, so I don't ever blame a radio station for changing the format (ARE YOU READING THIS BIG A, M. HAGGERTY, KMR, DAVID EDUARDO?????). Remember quite a while ago the successful architecht of the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign, James Carville, coined the phrase "It's the Econonomy, Stupid!!!" Well I say looking at playlists available on SoCal music radio, "It's the Listeners, STUPID!!!" or is it the stupid listeners? heh heh

It's boring to me, do you not get that????

I think it's obvious. Today, anyone can make their own personal radio station. That's what you want. So make it with your favorites, and have a nice day.

Radio stations play familiar favorites. That's what they do. They've been doing that for 50 years. I'd like to think that people would understand that by now. If it's boring to you, find something else. Your list looks pretty boring to me, but you won't hear me complain.

Super,

Don't hold us in suspense, what OTA station could this possibly be? This is much more diverse than KFOG. Reminds me of Radio Paradise, but usually Radio Paradise is even too obscure for me. I like being musically challenged, but I also like to hear something I know at least part of the time. This list comes closer to striking the right balance for me.

Thanks for the validation of the boring playlist of my these days favorite radio station. I echo your sentiments re. familiar vs. unfamiliar (not necessarily obscure).

KFOG has sounded a little stale since Dennis Constantine was relieved of his duties last year. Still, not too bad when you have a jock like Dredd Scott manning the evening shift and their 10 at 10 still beats the crap over almost any other 10 at 10 (though 107.1 The Peak is also stellar there). And both The Peak and KFOG's 10 at 10 make The Sound's 10 at 10 (do they still do that?) sound abysmal. The Peak (WXPK in White Plains, NY Westchester County 'New York's BackYard') doesn't play enough new and current tracks, has a few too many classic rock tracks/staples. KINK-FM in Portland does a great job with the right balance.

BUT the winner among some great radio stations is 92.5 The River "Boston's Independent Radio". They're the ones with the really boring playlist.

http://theriverboston.com/

When I first started sampling/listening to them about 2 or 3 years ago, they were not too diverse. But in the last 18-20 months they have made tremendous strides in a beautiful balance of old, current, and new in the genre. They're not afraid to go off in an unexpected direction such as playing the original of Jack White's cover of "I'm Shakin'" - yes The River played the original by Little Willie John (the song was written by Rudy Toombs).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Toombs

Also heard recently another track no radio station would likely play- Monty Python's (!!) "I Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" .... Within an hour after hearing that surprising track, The River played "Bright Side of the Road" by Van Morrison. The River also plays, of course, the Killers' "Mr. Brightside". Another one I heard recently was a song a fell in love with when I heard it many times on the old 101.9 KMPC-FM- "Indigo Eyes"-Peter Murphy

As far as I can tell, 92.5 The River is not voice tracked between 6 am and midnight, they talk about who's birthday it is today of singers and other personalities. (Just listening now and the jock mentioned today is Susan Dey's birthday-- She's 62 (Partridge Family)

"Pretty in Pink" - Psychedelic Furs just played.

Glad you like the boring variety of 92.5 The River's playlist. Be careful listening too long, you'll become addicted (like I am)

BTW forgot to mention on my commute home tonight I was sampling Alt 98.7 KYSR and KROQ and I'd guess about 75% of their playlists are also heard on stations like 92.5 The River. THEN I thought I'd tune in to The Sound to see what they were playing and I swear to God they were just beginning another Led Zep song though to their credit it wasn't a burned to a crispy critter track-- "The Wanton Song" from 1975's "Physical Graffiti".

Re-examining the playlist (of WXRV 92.5 The River) I posted above, here are the tracks that have been or are currently heard on either KYSR or KROQ or both:

Mister Fan, you've mentioned the overdoses of Led Zeppelin that you get from KSWD and KLOS. In 1973, the band's three Madison Square Garden concerts were recorded for a live album. It was titled The Song Remains The Same. Add an "s" to Song and remove the "s" from Remains and you have a perfect slogan for KSWD and KLOS!

Super,

Classic Rock is what it is; you know that. Apparently, you prefer Alternative. So do I. I prefer Alt 98.7 and KROQ most of the time. I like Adult Alternative even better but that has failed time and time again in LA. KCSN is a good AAA but it's a non-com so it can get a bit obscure at times. That said, when I am in the mood for Classic Rock, I think The Sound is very good. I don't know about bringing back Mark but I will listen and see how it goes.

As a side, I will try The River. It sounds interesting. You may want to try KLRR in Bend. It's an AAA.

I appreciate your comments. I'm not really pining for AAA in LA because I have so many other choices. Also I am well aware of KLRR I used to listen to them semi-regularly. They're still good, as is KINK their northwest neighbors. But I still feel WXRV 92.5 The River has the absolute best blend of music. Now if they only had The Peak's DJs or if only The Peak had WXRV's playlist that would be nirvana.

What many of the veterans here don't seem to realize (because they don't listen to the genre like I do) is that today's AAA is FAR different from the mid-90s AAA. The other day I looked at KROQ's playlist and at least 75% of their playlist is also shared by 80% or so of today's AAA stations. Alt 98.7 the same. Quite a few tracks that KRTH is playing these days also fit in nicely with the AAA playlist. Even My104 plays some tracks which would be comfortable on KINK or WXRV. And of course KLOS and KSWD play many tracks shared with AAA.

What's the connection to The Sound and old KMET?

I'm 52 but c'mon. Do I really have to hear these dinosaur dj's with ' AHOOOOYA Monday ' and ' Lil bit o heaven ' ?

Move on with life.

I think the average rock radio listener has Jack, KLOS, and the Sound on presets and simply toggles between the three. 30 years ago, it was KLOS, KLSX, and KMET. The jocks and music are pretty much interchangeable. Look at Jim Ladd. He was at all three stations: KLOS, KLSX, and KMET.

But the two current battling stations are not EXACTLY the same. KLOS has always had a harder rocking sound, willing to play not only Billy Joel but Black Sabbath. And Green Day or Nirvana. They are actually the station playing a wider range. As for the DJs at KLOS phoning it in, I'd argue Bob Coburn and Gary Moore are just as into the music as the Sound DJs. Coburn's Sunday night show is probably the most diverse free-form rock radio show to air on a big station in Los Angeles in the past three decades.

If I were running KLOS, I would dump the morning team. They are unlistenable. How about Jeff Gonzer from the KMET glory days. The Sound tries to evoke the memory of KMET, but KLOS is the true heritage station in town. Or put something on in the morning that is something totally fresh and new that is not watered down Howard Stern trash.

Can't say I'm that excited about Mark (or is it Brian?) coming back. But I listen to KUSC or KSCN in the morning, so what do I know. One thing that is smart is moving Uncle Joe off of morning drive, and giving him the "10@10." That slot, with its focus on music and history, is perfect for him given his background.

Yup, AAA has become more alternative, de-emphasizing the folksy, acoustic sound. At the same time, Alternative has become more melodic, de-emphasized the harder, active rock sound. I like that they both have separated themselves a little more from Mainstream and Active Rock.

KSWD is advertising for a third person to work the morning show with Mark Thompson and Andy Chanley beginning in January. Morning man Joe Benson will move to middays. His ratings have almost doubled in the past year. It's possible that he'll do equally well in middays and it's possible that Mark Thompson will maintain the high ratings of the morning show. Possible...but not likely. What is KSWD thinking???
