KWSS-LP New Times story

How can a full-disclosure'd story nevertheless fail to mention that KWSS-LP is not an all-music station? Someone tuning in on the weekend and gets a rerun of 'Democracy Now' or one of the other weekend talk show and they'll think they stumbled onto a hipper, less-geriatric KJZZ.

Eh...big deal. Radio Free Phoenix has been doing this for years.

And the music is better, much better.

When the morning 'talent' got his start DJ'ing wet t-shirt contests, that negates the need to mention that KWSS is not an all-music station. Duh!!! ;D

I know right!? I mean, wet t-shirt contests? Come on! I bet this morning guy is the type that has been behind the mic in front of people his whole life. That's not radio! What can you even learn about what people like and how to entertain people by actually going out, commanding the audience's attention and entertaining them in person!? Rubbish. And did you hear his voice? Sounds like the type that when people hear it they instantly mimic. What a loser! Can't believe the New Times thought it would be compelling to center a cover story around this no talent local.

Reasons why it is a non-story:

1- Low power FM that has an audience smaller than KPHX's (who knew that was even possible?)
2- Station doesn't show up on Arbytron
3- Station is not full-time music station
4- No format beyond "I play whatever I want to"
5- Unknown/no-name 'talent'
6- 100 watts, that's barely enough power to even warm a slice of humble pie
7- Shades of Rick Bloom
8- Insert your answer here

wow...

I knew the station existed, but actually was able to pick it up on the dial a couple of days ago over here on the west side. To be honest, the music that was being played certainly sounded better than many stations on the dial WITH ratings, known formats, "talent", etc.

Reasons why it is a non-story:

KHOS You sound like one of those people who can't understand or digest change or anything innovative other than vanilla forced fed crap. I've listened for 7 years and have heard and noticed kwss compared to the great KUKQ programed by Johnathan L Unique, innovated and clever. Just because an outfit doesn't have the millions of dollars for a mega signal, Arbitron subscription (BTW they are in the PPM system) doesn't mean its a "non-story" its home grown radio locally programed from here in Phoenix where you are too DUH! You might want to consider showing some pride the nearest LPFM is 100 miles from us plus the fact that it did make the cover DUH DUH DUH

Yeah, imagine that - an unapologetically "non-commercial" radio station in a town where there is practically NOTHING new and exciting on terrestrial AM/FM anymore, and people find cause to belittle it. We should be celebrating KWSS-LP's success, not mocking it. Or is radio just for the "fun" of it a bad thing now? That's the message we send to kids who do their crystal-radio kits for their science fairs: "Sorry, Little Jimmy, you can't enter this radio in the science fair."

Why is diversity of the airwaves a bad thing?
People talk about KWSS-LP like it's an embarrassment. I just don't get it.

These guys think it is BUSINESS & not Entertainment. They need to remember they ARE in the ENTERTAINMENT business. Most people I know who like music; like things that aren't being played on valley radio.

I love innovation, but the real measure of success is dollars and cents. What is KWSS billing per month? How many local listeners does KWSS have? Does KWSS have any national ad play? Radio is a business, plain and simple. EOM.

Low power FM stations are non-commercial community stations. They have to abide by the same underwriting rules as those in the 88-91.9 section of the band.

D'oh! You are correct. ;D Thanks for reminding me.

Responding to that, I agree in some ways, but non commercial radio should hopefully create something a little different. If they don't, what's the point?
