KWSS-LP off the air

So not fair. Only place on terrestrial AM/FM I could hear The Love-Me-Nots. What a sad day for those of still wishing Phoenix could eventually one day get its own KCRW or KEXP. It's still on my car radio pre-set. What goes there now? X103.9? I'd listen to KYOT before that ever happens.

I saw this message on their website:

"Hey all we'll be off the air on 106.7 for a while so we can do some major house cleaning and fixing up, check... "...FYI ???

The FCC database (Google 'FCC FMQ') for KWSS makes interesting reading.

They've applied for a silent STA to preserve the license for a while, after the FCC rejected another STA proposal. They make note of severe landlord issues and apparent equipment tampering. I certainly get the impression that someone with engineering experience needs to be guiding them. With a need to get that antenna only about 100' into the air, I'd scrap the idea of hanging it in a palm tree (!) and co-locate at a nearby cell site. 8)

According to this article in the Repulsive, they are trying to move to a new (unnamed) frequency. According to this application from last December, that frequency is 95.9, after having an app for 93.7 dismissed.

If that's true, than valley listeners of KKLD won't be too happy. According to the article, KWSS cites wanting to move to a clearer frequency, but 95.9 is definitely not a clear frequency with KKLD booming in throughout the valley. I know around Scottsdale and the rest of the listening area of KWSS, KKLD comes in really good. KWSS will probably have the same interference problems they had on 106.7. I wonder why they don't try to move to a clearer frequency like 96.5?

KWSS will be back on very soon, hopefully Friday and no later than Tuesday and at 106.7 for the time being. 95.9 was a consideration due to encroachment. But with the LCRA and the soon to be dismissal of all the FX apps, we will obtain a new final home on the FM Dial that is not surrounded by Spanish Stations and more centrally located on the Dial and it won't be 95.9. With the narrow transmitter location window for our 106.7 Transmitter, finding that perfect home has been more than difficult, but the end result will be a new frequency, located at a Broadcast site and no more Palm Trees ;D

Good to hear! I wish you guys the best of luck.

I've always thought that the 106.7 dial position was a bad spot with all the interference from KPPV up in Prescott and adjacent channel interference. Unless you're in and around Paradise Valley / north Scottsdale, it was very difficult to listen. I feared that 95.9 would also lead to some problems with interference from KKLD. I hope you guys find a suitable dial position with less interference. May I suggest the empty spot on 96.5? ;)

KWSS has never been completely happy at 106.7. 95.9 would have only been a temporary spot if encroachment would have been imminent and a place to go to in order to stay on the air and was never a desirable choice to begin with. 95.9 was only considered as a last resort due to all of the pending translator apps holding spectrum hostage. With those apps dismissed soon, this will open up more options and much better spots than 95.9 and the current 106.7. Thanks for the suggestion for 96.5.. But 96.5 will not work as it is short spaced by about 65 KM to KMXP and would require a 2nd channel waiver. Want to be fully spaced at a new frequency without waivers and such.

KWSS back on the air :)

KWSS back on the air :)

Just noticed! Signal appears to be about the same as before. On my drive from downtown to the East Valley, the signal is best around the Broadway Curve and along the 60 in Tempe. East of Alma School in Mesa, it becomes spotty. Still can't pick you guys up down here in Gilbert. :( Hopefully a new frequency position with less interference will improve the signal coverage.

Good to have you guys back on the air!
