KWSS Moving to 93.9

KWSS will be moving to 93.9 FM on March 10th. The FCC Approved this move today. Thanks to the Local Community Radio Act and the Feb 5th dismissal of the Phoenix Area Pending Translators from the Great Translator Invasion, KWSS will be able to move to a much better dial position. 106.7 FM Will be placed back into the Pool of available LPFM Channels for the anticipated LPFM Filing Window in October of this year. This move has been 2 years in the making for KWSS. Much of which has been a waiting game for the LCRA to kick in fully..

Awesome news. Keep playing Zero Zero and Bananagun. :)

KWSS is switching frequencies. Below is a snippet of how that will effect our signal strength.

It gives me pleasure to announce that the FCC has approved KWSS-LP to change channels from 106.7 MHZ to 93.9 MHZ in Phoenix Arizona effective immediately. This transition has been two years in the making and is now up to us to make sure that we promote it correctly so that we can migrate all our terrestrial listeners over to our new channel 93.9 FM. The reason for the transition is to move to a cleaner frequency away from Entravision’s 106.9 signal in the west valley, as well as make permanent some engineering anomalies in the past with our transmitter geographic location. The engineering models predict that listening quality will improve in areas where 106.9 in Buckeye dominates FM receivers. My study has shown this to be indoor FM receivers in Phoenix, Glendale, and even further west. Car stereos will most likely stop when in scan mode on KWSS where as now they lock onto 106.9 and listeners must manually tune in. In other areas of the valley a perceived increase in signal should be noticed as we can increase our modulation level without interfering to 106.9 as this is not a power increase for us but a move to an area of spectrum on the dial where we don’t’ have powerful stations above and below our dial position. The analogy would be like speaking in a crowded room to be heard, then walking into a quiet room and speaking at the same level, people listening would hear you clearer than in the crowded room.

KWSS is LP (only 100 watts) so I doubt it. Don't forget there is a 106.7 in Prescott (closer than Flagstaff) so its the same situation.
Just thinking that the little Prescott KPPV, 3,700 watts @ 106.7 compared to a 94,000 watt blowtorch for 93.9 with one of the highest elevation sticks...?

Same only different, I guess. ;)

KWSS is fully Spaced with KMGN and we expect about the same results to the North with co-channel with KMGN as we got from KPPV. The Priority was to avoid 1st channel interference that was received by 106.9 to our South, Southwest and West which is the primary focus for KWSS. 93.9 should fix that issue and offer better reception. So to the North it is the same only different..

Wow, I'll be a little surprised if The Mountain, KMGN 93.9 in Flagstaff, sitting up high & mighty, won't be affected. Is this interference signal not any consideration for Black Canyon City & points north?

::)

Even without KMGN the chance of KWSS getting the 100 watt ERP signal into Black Canyon City is not going to happen. Even attempting to hit New River or Anthem would be difficult given the distance for 100 watts ERP. What ever signal KMGN has in those areas won't be touched by KWSS.

I can see this move helping penetration into the West Valley, but not so sure with the East Valley. With KRDE at 94.1 and sitting on top of Pinal Peak, its easily heard clear in central Phoenix. I hope this shift in frequencies and towers will not effect my listening in the car and at home.

Like the move to a clearer frequency, but it sounds like this is not going to help listening at all in the East Valley. Right now here in Gilbert, KWSS is non-existent. From everything I'm reading, sounds like this move is only going to help listening in the West Valley, a location where I haven't had much problem listening to KWSS in the past. On the other hand, listening in the East Valley anywhere east of Tempe has always been a struggle. Hopefully this move improves East Valley coverage, but it doesn't sound too promising. :-\

It say's on here KWSS is running 100 Watts, but according to "Radio-Locator.com" it shows the new construction permit running only at 3 Watts. Am I still gonna hear them on my stereo here at 7th ave and Indian School???

You're right. 3 watts on the CP, 13 watts on the current license. They're moving from 28th & Cactus higher up to Shaw Butte. I don't think the loss of 10 watts is going to matter much where you are.

Chandler south of Germann is still strong for 93.9; they came in good on the north 303 also. Still almost no reception in Mesa though :-[

As someone who sometimes likes to listen to KRDE, I was not happy with the move to 93.9! I live near 7th Street and Bethany Home, and KWSS definitely goofs up KRDE in my area! Granted, KRDE doesn't have that great a signal compared to south of Camelback. Yesterday, I was at the COFCO center and for the most part, KRDE was able to hold its own against KWSS. Still, I'm not real happy. The FCC couldn't put KWSS at 93.7?

There's a class C allocation at 93.7 out of Wickenburg in the current auction 94, so putting KWSS there wouldn't have lasted long. Looks like they'll have to change frequency again.
