KWSX-1280 Changes Back To News/Talk But Not Simulcasting KFIV-1360

Just noticed today that KWSX-1280 has dropped their Simulcast of Active Rock KMRQ-96.7 and is now back to News/Talk but this time, they aren't simulcasting KFIV-1360 like they had in the past. Will it succeed? Who knows? The KFIV Simulcasts haven't. So far, they have been broadcasting ARMSTRONG & GETTY, GLENN BECK and TOM SULLIVAN. I don't know if they will have any Local Talk but I somehow doubt it. They are iding as AM 1280 STOCKTON'S NEWS/TALK. No Website That I Know Yet?

Smart...Stockton doesn't need a translator for a Modesto News/Talk. With automation, they don't need to spend more money and can create a station with imaging for Stockton.

While the imaging is for Stockton, the shows are not. So far today, There was ARMSTRONG & GETTY (syndicated out of Sacramento from KSTE-650) in the morning, followed by GLENN BECK and then it was TOM SULLIVAN (though there was a sub host) from NOON-3:pM. Now, KWSX is SIMULCASTING the KFBK AFTERNOON NEWS complete with KFBK NEWSTALK 1530 ID's. Why? KFBK comes in loud and clear in Stockton. At least KFIV-1360 has a Locally Produced Morning News. I have listened to almost an hour and a half and still no Stockton News.

In addition to 1280's woes of being between KFIV's and KFBK's markets, apparently Clear Channel
STILL hasn't updated its website as to the change from the Spanish format to the KMRQ simulcast!:

I don't hold much hope for ANY "localism" on 1280's newest format...

I wonder what Ort Lofthus is thinking, as he watches and hears the station he proudly managed go
through much change - mostly negative - since his days there, when it was successful...

KWSX is simply simulcasting BOTH KSTE-650 and KFBK-1530!

Just got an email from a CC Modesto Staffer. Even he was caught offguard, though he had known a change was coming. The change occurred today at 6:AM. Despite the automation to make KWSX sound local, AM 1280 essentially will simulcast a combination of both KSTE and KFBK. Nothing will be produced locally. In fact, KWSX was simulcasting the KFBK AFTERNOON NEWS from 3:pM-7:pM and with the exception of Top and Bottom of the Hour Id's, I heard nothing but KFBK NEWSTALK 1530 Id's. Right now, KWSX is simulcasting the Best Of A & G from KFBK right now. So instead of being a Translator for a One Modesto Newstalk Station, It is now a Translator for TWO SACRAMENTO NEWSTALK STATIONS! And funny thing though, In Stockton, Both KSTE-650 AND KFBK-1530 comes in clearer to Stockton than KFIV-1360. I can only guess what Ort Lofthus is thinking right now.

In my opinion, 1280 went downhill, After Ort Lofthus retired. While Joel Gamble's Newstalk version wasn't bad (At least they had local Talk), Once they sold 1280, Down To The Toilet, It Went! I do give Joel Gamble credit for reinventing 99.3 from Elevator Music K-JAX to Light Rock K-JOY!

Agreed on all counts, MMSam...
BTW, was is not the Summer or Fall of 1989 when the KJAX to 1280/K-JOY to 99.3 flip occured?
Man, how the time FLIES!!...

I can give you the EXACT DAY AND TIME! The change occurred on Monday, OCTOBER 23, 1989 at 7:pM. NEWSTALK 1280 first show was THE LARRY KING SHOW while LIGHT ROCK JOY 99FM's first show was PAUL CONLEY's Evening Jazz Show which started on AM 1280. The calletters officially changed later but 1280 ID'd as K-JAX NEWSTALK 1280 and 99.3 was LIGHT ROCK JOY FM.I don't know when RICH DIXON became P.D. of KJAX?
