KWTX History

I'm interested in learning more about the history of KWTX-FM in Waco, but can't seem to find anything online. Can anyone recall when it signed on? Has it always held the same call letters? What years did it start airing top-40 music and branding as "97.5 FM?" Any answers are much appreciated!

According to KWTX-FM's file, it began operation on July 17, 1978 @ 97-5MHz.

Now, to my understanding, it has always been Top 40/CHR, a continuance of the AM format that began on 1230 in 1966. This is all from the recollection of a family member living near Waco, in a once prosperous town called Marlin. I can personally attest to 97-5 operating as a Top 40 as early as 1982. I can't verify 1230 was ever Top 40, other than the cousin's testimony of the events.

It has maintained the KWTX call set throughout its lifetime, and the only difference I know of in the imaging is that the call letters were dropped in the early 90's. It used to be a little less generic than it is now, using the "97.5 KWTX" image previously.

Hope that is of some help to you.

Wow, fantastic info, Liberty! I had to email the link to my cousin, seeing as how he was way off. Thank you for the history lesson on KWTX.

Wanna go two for two? Tell me about DKQRL (ex KRZI). Why was it killed off in order to move Mexia's old K-Bus into Waco? Historically, what mark (if any) did 1580 leave on Waco? Was it always an also ran?

From what I can gather KRZI started life as KBGO and was the Top 40 station for Waco. I'm not entirely sure why the license was deleted, somehow it ended up on 1660 but it doesn't appear 1660 was tied to the 1580 frequency like the other X-Band stations are.

... It sort of reminds me of the old KRZI 1580 pattern that barely made it across town, and it had a similar unnecessary lobe pointed south. That old pattern (dating back to the KBGO days) was an absolute nightmare, and I'm not sure the thing was ever fully within the licensed parameters for any extended period during its entire existence.

I remember that old KRZI night pattern--when making a frequent drive between DFW and Austin in the 70's I recall there was only a relatively short stretch of I-35 that KRZI covered at night. And it got slopover from then-more-powerful XERF on 1570.

Here are the somewhat difficult to search for history cards for KRZI.
