KWXY (Palm Springs) Off The Air?

There are reports on a fan page on Facebook that KWXY is off the air. Their website is "expired" and their web streams are also down.

David?

I am too far from its transmitter to hear the AM at night. Will check tomorrow in car. The translator never reached me, as I am behind some little mountains, so I can not check that, either.

IVOX also owned KKGX 920/99.1 and a low power TV station in the Coachella Valley. Nothing filed yet with the FCC.

The last time I listened to the KWXY stream, they were playing recent and newly released indie music from various genres, with a bunch of specialty music shows that were mostly syndicated. That 92.3 translator only covered the city of Palm Springs and Cathedral City. And the 1340 AM, well . .considering DavidE lives in the valley and can't hear it, pretty much says it all.

For AM, the Coachella Valley has very low conductivity... about the lowest in the U.S. So KWXY is not listenable at my location in SE La Quinta ever. If I go outdoors with the PL880 I can get it daytime, but not at night. The FMs are blocked by terrain.

920 is very directional, and hard to hear here at night. Will check tomorrow. There is an additional story on that one, as the site was sold and it has / had to move.

I've been curious about the status of these stations recently, so did some digging. None of their socials have been updated since 2022 at the latest from what I see, but they're streaming at a site called ivox.plus, which hosts streams for KWXY (playing what could best be described as a sort of classic alternative, from what I'm hearing) along with "Rockin' 24/7" which seems to be a vintage/rockabilly sort of mix, and "Rock 101.9" which has a site here:

On the iVox site, it's described as a Twentynine Palms station which suggests it's airing on 101.9 KJVV in that community. A post in a social media group for fans of KWXY indicate KJVV flipped to that format in December of 2023.

The ivox site also lists a stream for KKGX which is silent. But I found what's supposed to be a KKGX stream here:

http://ednixon.com:8200/stream - currently listening and hearing the BBC World Service, which is also listed as an option on the iVox site. Haven't heard an ID yet.

Also found this:

It's something different, at least. I admire anyone who tries.

A post I'd overlooked in the fan group indicates that the stations are scheduled to relaunch next month (posted by someone associated with the station as an engineer.)

Supposedly KWXY considers itself "classic rock" which is, erm... subjective.

It's stated they went into bankruptcy October 10th, 2024 to fend off a foreclosure on the studios and will be emerging from it in late 2025. Also says that a part of the restructuring is going to restore the link to the FM translators at Edom Hill which was disrupted due to American Tower prohibiting access to it over a rent dispute. So it seems the FMs are off at least. No idea about 920 or 1340.

One thing I'll say is that this situation certainly holds intrigue. If Comella owns property worth a couple million, why is he undergoing bankruptcy? It would seem he could cash out the property and run the stations practically non-profit if he wanted.

BTW, great detective work!

I was listening to the stream, and this is the most mainstream direction I've heard yet on the IVOX KWXY. It's the biggest rock hits from the late 60's to 2k. From Cream 'White Room' to Dave Matthews 'Crash'. The website only emphasizes the specialty shows, with no format positioner. But, as you mentioned the actual launch hasn't happened yet.

For some reason, KKGX has always been an afterthought for IVOX. No website, no streaming. I don't know why they bother keeping it, or just simulcast with KWXY. It's possible the land that the KKGX towers sit on, is up for sale, which would be the demise of KKGX.

We'll see what happens next month when the OTA signals are back.

The towers are on the land for sale, so KKGX would have to be re-sited. I can't imagine that's going to be a simple task.
With the bankruptcy situation, probably not. One possibility would be to diplex on the KWXY tower, however, going non directional would be almost impossible to avoid interfering with AM 920 in Las Vegas.

It looks like IVOX is probably leasing KJVV. They are still owned by Virtues Communications. At one time, they were going to purchase the 101.9 translator from K-Love, but that deal fell through. If that didn't happen, having both of the 101.9 signals, would have been ideal for KWXY to be on.
