KWXY Sale Gone Through?

Another listener here hoping for the return of KWXY to the air and streaming. It's so unique in a sea of sameness, always a treat when in Palm Springs to have a reason to use the radio. The lack of ads has for a while has been concerning, it's hard to believe it isn't an attractive demographic for advertisers. I recall reading a few years ago that they did quite an ad sales business.

Depends on whom you ask. If you ask KWXY listeners, at least on the KWXY Facebook fans page, no format change is forthcoming. I follow the page there and someone did supposedly contact IVOX about a week ago regarding the station being silent. According to him, IVOX said they were working on antenna upgrades of some sort and that, although they couldn't guarantee there wasn't a format change in the works, IVOX had no plans at this time to change KWXY's programming. Of course, if you ask all those people here on this forum and elsewhere who loathe any type of B/EZ formats, you'll probably hear that KWXY's adult standards format is toast. Me...I'm an avid fan of the adult standards, beautiful music, easy listening formats, but at the same time, I try to look at the situation objectively. Granted, I'd hate to see the station fall by the wayside, but KWXY has been off the air now continuously for two weeks time. The KWXY website is down and the phone number has been disconnected at the station. Doesn't look promising, unfortunately...

Thread on KWXY Facebook page regarding possible format change:
Ivox could be lying about them keeping the adult standards format.

Having moved to So Calif in the mid 90s, I became aware of KWXY and yes, the station was full of advertisers. It was the number one station in Palm Springs then and perhaps into the early 2000s. Of course, years pass and I don't need to explain why this format no longer attracts advertisers. Plus, its most recent incarnation was two ownerships removed from its glory days.

If you enjoy the beautiful music format, there are still choices. Sirius XM's Escape is a wonderful channel for fans of this format. Or try www.crystalradio.ca .

KWXY.com is now forwarding to the CDC website. Yes, you read that correctly...the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention site. 😮

My impression and gut feeling is that they got in over their heads....

Their check has been cashed....and now they have landed with a wild untamed big white elephant.

I believe they had to sign off as the transmitter land was sold. Gary made one of those incredible deals as the land appreciated in value. I think that the new owner has to relocate the facilities before going back on the air.

The stations will come back on the air this month.

COMELLA, telling the paper "Bottom line, man, we’re changing it up," said that KWXY will be back with "relatively moderate tweaks" but KKGX will be back with a more balanced lineup as "KKGX ALTERNATIVE TALK RADIO," with music at night.

He bought the stations property in Cathedral City and Palm Springs for $770,000 but the palm springs property is listed for sale for over $2 mil?

The Palm Springs lot would be worth a chunk without radio towers on it. An undeveloped area on the north side of I-10. All he has to do is diplex 920. The old owner could have cashed in, too. Maybe he didn't have the capital for the transmitter move.

The sale of the property produced far more than the purchase price of the stations, meaning it was a "no brainer" to sell at a large profit and let someone else worry about returning the station to the air. In fact, it was the offer for the property that resulted in the need to sell the stations... all in the middle of "the plague year".

Actually it's an undeveloped site south of the I-10. Although hard to imagine it's worth anything like $2M!
Have you priced land along the I-10 corredor lately? With the $300 million arena coming just down the road, all the land around there has shot up in price.

True. But if you check out Google Earth, it's a sandy area well away from existing housing or any other buildings, with poor access. Anyway, if iVox does get millions for it, Garry with two 'r's (you had to listen to get that) will not be a happy man.

It's adjacent to the Ramon wash. If you're buying 28 acres for commercial use, you'll create your own access---likely two or three intersecting with Gene Autry Trail and another with Vista Chino.

San Francisco has a 28-acre development in progress near the ballpark. And Pittsburgh is contemplating one as well. Here's what they can do with that much land:

Anything in Palm Springs would likely be simpler and lower density, but it's a chunk of land, a chunk of potential and $2.5 million ain't that much money in Southern California real estate:

I’ve been listening online for months. In October I move in to my house in Desert Palms… pity to hear the format will change. They say ‘tweak’, but I suspect ‘torch’.
