KWXY Sale Gone Through?

I’ve been listening online for months. In October I move in to my house in Desert Palms… pity to hear the format will change. They say ‘tweak’, but I suspect ‘torch’.
Yeah, the phrase "instrumental stuff that’s not necessarily appropriate" is a big red flag for that format.

Both KWXY and KKGX are returning to the air today 12/12 at 12pm. A lot of BIG changes to both stations. All the details are in the following article in the Desert Sun newspaper.

The music station will do different eras of music in different dayparts. Obviously the owner has no radio experience and I doubt that will last.

How about the plans for KGX? Without hearing it yet, sounds like it might be somewhat interesting. Will have to wait and see. I had heard it would play jazz evening and overnight. But that could have changed

There's still the KGX transmitter site issue to resolve. Nothing mentioned, but figure it still is located near I-10 and Gene Autry Trail.

Going as low as 250 watts with a diplex on one stick ND won't work, due to nearby KRLV 920 Las Vegas.

Maybe they could try to diplex on a site with multiple towers to keep it directional.

The problem with sites in the Coachella Valley is that effective sites are limited to land on the northern side paralleling the freeway (I-10). The market is very long and thin, about 35 miles from Whitewater to Coachella. And the ground conductivity is probably the worst in the US... at least as bad as Long Island, NY, and worse than around Atlanta, GA.

The result is that no AM station covers the full market. The more successful news-talk uses three AMs, and the rest cover one or the other ends but not all. And because the market is so long and thin, most of the translators don't cover from one end to the other, either.

Monday was the first day of the new KWXY. I tuned in periodically to get an idea of what is going on.

During the day, it was Big Band, Swing, followed by Wink Martindale's History of Rock N Roll featuring 70's songwriters. Then a 50's flashback show with nothing harder played than Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock". Early evening was a Nat King Cole retrospective. After that it got real bizarre...

They are now in a CHR, 80''s new wave, rhythmic oldies, standards mode. Heard Katy Perry's "California Girls", followed by an ancient Dean Martin tune, The Average White Band, The Police, Wayne Newton, complete with Iheart CHR style sweepers uttering "KWXY, The Sound of the Desert". It's horrific!

Won't be listening to this ever again. The now former KWXY listeners are probably thinking the same thing.

I streamed it all night while driving 434 miles. It was weird until 5 AM. When a flashback show began with the 40's and is still running up to today's hits. Year by year a couple of songs from each. They lost me in the ninetys. Top songs from each year or at least in the top 10. I will check it out again tonight.

On the new website, the schedule page is empty. Maybe this a work in progress, with A LOT fine tuning to be done.

I remember WOW at the beginning It's much better now. But this is a truly different approach for a commercial station. 🤔
