KWXY stream

Hello everyone.

I was going back through the various threads on this board, and I ran across the one about KWXY Palm Springs. I remembered fondly enjoying them about a decade ago when they had a webstream. This got me to wondering if they had brought the stream back. After a little digging, I ran across www.kwxy.net This site is run by one of their announcers, and he has set up a continuous stream of the station at the top of the site. I know this will be of interest to several on this board.

From what I read in the thread about this station, it will be going away eventually :( so I plan to listen and enjoy this unique format right up to the end. Now, I hope others can do the same.

As far as I'm concerned, the FCC can take its sweet time in ruling on the sale of the station. I don't mean that to say I wish ill upon the company buying it, or the current owner. I simply want to see this format remain alive for as long as possible.

WOW! Talk about your B/EZ throwbacks! They sure don't make 'em like THIS no more! And is that static from the web feed or is that analog tape carts I hear? BONUS POINTS if it is......

Knowing radio these days, you'll probably be hearing some gangbanging garbage on 98.5 down there when this sales goes through. But I'd sooner listen to this station than that lame "Smooth Jazz" nonsense they have everywhere......

Now I know it's carts......the tape flutter on this piano rendition of "Everything I Own" is unmistakeable......

Sounds good...thanks for the link! I'm headed out there again for spring break (thaw out these Maine bones) and hope they will still be on; My last trip out there was back in July for a convention, they sounded very robust....Most refreshing to hear these days.
Nothing much like it here in Maine, except for WJTO-730 Bath and local WDEA-13790 Ellsworth with their new MOYL format.

Glad to help, folks. I knew some people would be interested.

Actually, I wonder if the music they play is taken from reel to reel tapes, not carts. Though the commercials certainly could still be on cart. Or, they may have transfered everything onto a hard drive. This would be quite a task, given all the LPs and reels they must have in their library.

Speaking of hard drives. Here's a novel idea for the company about to buy the station. I know you guys feel a watered down standards format will be more commercially viable. Which is fine, it will be YOUR station after all. But, would it be too much trouble to put up a web stream or an HD subchannel to preserve the Beautiful Music format?
Ok, so it would be automated. But, at least then the music could still be heard by those who truly appreciate it. I would hate to see these timeless recordings disappear from the airwaves forever.

Or, maybe a weekend specialty program of this music. I know that's wishful thinking, no, make that DREAMING. But, just thought I would throw the suggestion out there for whatever it's worth.

Great to see so much interest in Beautiful Music on this board. I'm just entering my 30s, and I love this music.

I grew up listening to standards and beautiful music, too...I"m 41 now, so I am not "one foot in the grave", either. ;) I was under the impression that KWXY was mostly instrumental, but I noticed that there are quite a bit of vocals already in place. I've always wanted to be able to hear this station stream, considering its format and longevity.

Where did you hear that the new owners would be going with a standards format? I doubt that would be the case. Standards stations aren't all that great a sell, unfortunately. Don't the prospective owners already have a station there in Palm Springs or somewhere thereabouts? I was thinking some type of oldies format was eventually going to reside on KWXY's frequency once the sale went through.

The sale has been approved. On Feb.2nd, or the 16th the switch of KWXY to 1340 am will take place. It will be streamed on it's new web site ! It will be standards on hard drive. Presently all of KWXY's music is on very old reels, some of which were made in 1959 at then KPOL in Los Angeles (1540/93.9). There will be hit vocals and instrumentals from a library of 2,000 titles, but the "elevator music" of instrumental cover versions will go. Don Wordell (upped to music director) and Ford Michaels will be brought over from the current staff joining KDES 104.7 weekend jock Jon Bruce with daily live shows from 6am to at least 7pm and maybe 10pm. I have listened to the "new" playlist and it is 1,000 times better than what KWXY now plays. Oh, by the way KDES moving to 98.5 plays classic hits of the late 60's,70's and 80's. KDES old frequency of 104.7 will be moved to the Riverside market with a "hip-hop" format.

Re: KWXY stream : Automated news voice

What I love is the automated news voice at 10:47 p.m.

Or is it actually a person?

I was VERY dissapointed to find that KWXY was moving to 1340 Am from 98.5FM. HOWEVER when I went to their site this morning I discovered that they are now streaming live! http://www.kwxy.com/ Would love to know how to get it to play on itunes so I can stream it through airport express to various stereos in the house. If anybody knows how to do this please let me know. The KWXY.net listed previously is not streaming KWXY but is streaming the station that took its place at 98.5 which sucks.

It looks as though the stream is done through streamtheworld. I know CBS uses them for their stations and that most of their streaming URLs will work on my internet radio. However, I wasn't able to stream KWXY in Itunes after trying to open one of the CBS stream URLs and substituting "KWXYAM" in place of the calls. I even tried "KWXYFM" just in case they were using "FM" in the URL. I used URL snooper and it says "flash" for the stream type, so I'm guessing that maybe the stream will only work in a browser. :(

There is no contact info on the front page of the KWXY website, either, so there is no way to find out from the station.

Nonsense??? ??? I respectfully disagree, even though I detected a tone of "disrespect" in your comment. And the term "everywhere"??? ??? is a tad odd since the format has undergone changes in many markets of late. I happen to appreciate that format a great deal, in addition to the music that contributors to THIS board enjoy writing about.
