KWYZ 1230 off the air again

During this evening's bandscan, 1230 up here in Everett is missing again. Back in September 2021, it was off the air for a few days. Without any news to the contrary, I'm assuming this is a temporary situation again this time.

Better to be off the air completely than throwing out a carrier sans any audio. Radio India, KWLE 1340 Anacortes, has been broadcasting "dead air" for several weeks now.

That’s public service silence so people can meditate in the quiet. 🤫

And KWYZ lives again. Listening to Korean ballads now at 6:25 p.m. on Saturday. I heard KORT and KOZI from Idaho and Eastern Washington, respectively, last night during the local station's absence on 1230.

So sad the days of CJKW, "Orca-FM" , are long gone. The old K-Whale 1340 could have been repurposed for similar whale sounds . Beats dead air...

The lights are on but nobody's home. How much is a power bill for 1000 watts unlimited 24/7? Does KWLE even get listeners on a regular basis from the 101.9 translator in Bellingham? In fact, is the 101.9 translator even transmitting anything (paging Bongwater)?

I don't think it's been even a fairly relevant signal since the days of KLKI.

I’m sure that you could count their listeners on one hand, but having a fm translator in Bellingham isn’t the worst thing to have. It would get a few listeners with the right format. They’re not interested in that right now though, since they’re trying to reach listeners accords the border. Their AM is more viable at this point since it has a better chance of hitting Victoria or Surrey. Same goes for KRPA.

Let's say that the site, with transmitter, tower lights, AC or heat, security lights, audio rack and anything else uses 2.5 kw/h of power at $0.15 a kwh. That is about $270 a month for power.

Remember, except for high power stations in much smaller markets, electricity is not a significant cost item.

What I find amusing is in another thread, some poster's are always claiming that keeping AM in vehicle radios because in case the local/regional cell network goes down, AM will be there for the community. This is a prime example of where that argument falls apart.
