KXAM and the West Valley

During the day, I try to listen to KXAM and usually my signal is good, but if I'm driving and I get anywhere WEST of 67th Ave and anywhere SOUTH of Northern, their signal is wiped out by something coming through on 1320 AM. I've been trying to find out what station it is, but the only thing I can find is KAWC out of Yuma, but the station I'm hearing is always a VERY enthusiastic preacher... KAWC doesn't have anything that shows "Religious Programming" on their site.

Does anyone know where this other station is coming from? Are they operating above their allotted power? Is there anything I can do to hear KXAM while driving?

HELP!

Thanks!

Jayson,

It could be by your descriptions Salt lake city at 1320, or Oceanside CA.

both carry religious content and talk.

...Or it could be that KPXQ 1360 is overwhelming your radio with their daytime 50,000 watt non-directional blowtorch emanating from 75th Ave and Camelback...

Oh, yes...KXAM's transmitter is in Mesa, just northeast of Brown Rd and Country Club Dr., not far from where the Chicago Cubs do their spring training...They run 5,000 watts non-directional days, and only 500 watts directional at night, essentially limiting them to the East Valley while it's dark outside...

That seems likely - the 1320s mentioned earlier don't carry religion. Salt Lake is sports; California is a college station.

I remember sub-contracting to Dave Dickson...on KXAM - the radials are shorter to the north and west on the main tower because SRP did some grading along the canal there back around 1989. This cut the radials because they graded too deep.

I remember for a month there we dug them up and we had silver soldered over 12 of them on the west side... and 6 on the north side before we found out they needed to replace them because they were trashed.

When we would do monitoring, we would notice they were not kicking the signal out like KXAM was authorized to.

Ya know... I think it's time to call Dave!

I thought it might have sounded a bit off... and was thinking of calling him... well that settles it.

Beave was this Nationwide when you were here?

Also, the 1320 Oceanside is directional west with the lobe out over the Pacific ocean. One of the worst land area coverage stations I have seen. It is boxed in by XEC 1310 Tijuana, not to mention 1330 Los Angeles.

Jeffery,
This was 1992/1993... I believe this was the ownership prior to the news/talk
1310 programming. I want to believe it was standards or something. 15 years makes the memory a little fuzzy.
