KXAM going silent?

My pal Einstein said... “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

So I will stop here before I remove any doubt about my state of mind.

Akbar... of course there was a disconnect... I was playing songs to take the SIGNAL out the way I found it...

It was not a swan song to and for the listeners. It was saying goodbye to what was once a MUSIC signal.

Thought I was clear on that one..

And anyone who listened between 9pm and 12am were either my listeners (who expect and will allow my odd flights of fancy) or Rusty Humphries two listeners... who I am hoping finally figured out that if they wanted to hear Glenn Beck's act... they could just listen to KTAR.

There were a nice crowd of people listening... lots called and in the days that passed... lots emailed... and they all seemed to get it but you. I am not saying it was a barn burner of ratings... but I was far from alone as I laid the old KZZP AM to rest... with current music... like it played when I first heard it.

So thanks to you guys for all the kind words... I am gonna rejoin old Einstein and observe the rest of the nutters from the sidelines... and start looking for a new job.

Hello tdfstamp:

Yes, I remember the purple and yellow thing. That was still around the time that this board was called VOTS (Valley Of The Sun radio and TV board). A certain ham radio operator may remember it too ;-)
I have fond memories of my time spent with RI. Being around just a little less time than tdfstamp, I recall Akbar but could never figure out who he was. He's made fun of pretty much everyone in the market, past and present. Ever think that he may be a a TV newscaster? ;D

If we're thinking of the same BK, I believe we banned him a couple of years ago. He might have made it back here to RI during version 2.0.1 though.

Hi Jeffry. I'm sorry about KXAM. You've got too much experience and inspiration to be sitting around for very long, though. I hope the best for the whole crew. I worked for KXAM for a minute, after I left the Big To's. I gracelessly split when a better job came along. Cindi was very nice.

I've posted and lurked here for about ten years...I think a little more...back when it was this purple and yellow thing (does anyone remember that?)...Anyway, I've always thought that Akbar was Charles Goyette. Whoever he is, he knows a lot about local radio, and he seems like an oldster; only a d-bag cracks wise at a funeral, though.

Hey Patti, who got banned? Who do you mean? I'm intrigued. It wasn't BK, was it? I remember he used to post here, and those threads could get pretty entertaining.

The old KZZP AM? That was about 19 years ago and no one listened to 13~Ten for music back then anyway! Nurse Jeff and I are more than curious about the "resting place" for KXAM's xmttr site at the Mesa Cemetery. Is that owned or leased from the city? And if the city takes back the land for "horizontal" purposes, couldn't 13~Ten be diplex from the KMIK site just about a mile north?

Actually, Dr. Akbar, I was one of 5 people who used the AM signal of KZZP 19 years ago. I used to drive a truck that only had an AM radio in it. 19 years ago I could survive with just an AM radio. Not so today.

The poster's initials were ZH.At least I think he got banned, they remove his posts whenever he manages to get in. I'm trying to remember BK, I lurked here for many years before posting.Interesting guess about Akbar but I'll bet not. Goyette took himself too seriously to be the playful practitioner.

A veritable "gold mine" of a find (not to be confused with the Gold Mine
on Lumberyard 1440).

Now if we could only bring all those posts back from cyberspace!
(You get 404ed when you click on any of them. :()

Hahaha... Zuma Hans! I remember getting into with that guy on a few occasions. Then there was that Kyle Hojem kid (at least I thought of him as a kid) begging for obscure airchecks. Those were the days! I bet I had at least one post a day deleted from that board ;)

Believe me ZH is long gone. I remember talking to him privately too. Interesting fellow.

BK. Rhymes with Spruce Belly. ;)

Zuma Hans in correct! He was involved in TV out here in California then.

Thanks for remembering me Nik. Didn't know you were still around. And yes, I was a kid then. Just about 12 or 13. That's when I was really into radio airchecks. Things have slowed a bit since that time, but I still have my tapes.

I thought so, too. But Goyette and I were friendly competitors when I was at KTAR and he was at KFYI...and while we were at lunch one day, Akbar posted. This was in 2001, and I don't think it was possible to post from a mobile device then. With him off the list, I honestly had no idea who Akbar could be and figured he was probably an ad agency exec that I either had or hadn't met along the way.

But Todd Wallace? That's an interesting theory...

Nurse Jeff and I want to know: will we have our first 100 degree day before the KXAM web site goes 404??

We did. Tuesday April 21. 102 Dees-grees. KXAM site still up this morning.

Did you forget to participate in the KT'R contest this year? ;D Now, instead
of just two free dinners at Bill Johnson's, the Agua Fria Freddie winner also
gets a copy of Aunt Carlos' book! (He'll deliver it personally.)

Now the FCC database shows KXAM as "licensed and silent"....which begs the question: what's the difference between off the air and silent? How long can the Gersons hang on to their license while not providing service? The Nurse and I imagine the FCC will yank it at some point..unless of course they actually surrender the license. Then what: a rash of applicants for 13~Ten?

They have one year of non-operation (they eventually can't just fire up the transmitter and air tone or carrier) before the FCC can delete the license, after filing a Remain Silent Notification. Looking at the RSN, it looks like old man Gerson is still considering his options with what to do with the license, so it still could be sold.

With 1190 and 1310 both off the air and on the market, and not much demand for AM's other than the brokered/ethnic operators, I wonder what will happen with these two signals?

Bids are due today (Thursday) at noon for KNUV. Will there be any bidders?

If you click on "classified ads" on the R-I home page, there is an ad with a link to a website containing lots of data on the Phoenix market, including revenue data for all AM and FM stations, transmitter site lease, depreciation tables, etc.
